    1. most straight men are not listening to CRJ
    2. not an indie or even dressed up as an indie. She was signed to scooter braun for this album,Had Tom Hanks,Justin Bieber,King Bach in her music video for promotion
3.cause it flopped, it caught gays attention

rest i agree. its a very well made pop album but definitely overrated on internet

A lot of straight men that are into music are part of her fanbase, let's be real.

I agree that it's not indie, it was just a commercial failure. But since it was not popular, it got this "authenticity" that most mainstream girls didn't have

    jesus christ you cooked

    I remember that era

Suddenly, a bunch of men that never cared about [female] pop music became fans of Carly after Fantano, Pitchfork, etc which is great and all, but they were also acting like she was the only good and worth listening pop singer while criticizing the big ones like TS, B, KP, LG, etc

No offense but I feel like the reason some people d***ride this album so much is because it was the first pop album from a woman a lot of straight men actually listened for the first time ever and only because publications like Pitchfork were praising it and because it's "indie"

As someone who always listened to pop music all my life, I don't get what makes it so special and different from what other pop girls were doing

It's not innovative and it's not influential or discussed outside of gays, r/popheads and the straight men mentioned above

1989 literally came out months before

Emotion isn't any "different" from what her contemporaries were doing in terms of sound, it's just that it has 12 songs that don't suck instead of 3 songs that don't suck like most pop products. It's just a f***ing good album, way better and more consistent than what was coming out out back then. CRJ is also a likable presence and people feel they can relate to what she sings about.

I was getting cooked on ktt1 when i said its not this amazing ass album everyone was claiming it was
    Still a good album tho.

Chronically online straight dudes bring up 1989 as some kind of gotcha in this discussion like Taylor Swift invented tolerable pop music in 2014, which is f***ing hilarious, but hating on Emotion for being praised as innovative is a strawman for the most part. Whatever OP might be saying, the majority of people who enjoy that album do so because it's so consistently good.

1989 is fine but let's not pretend Bad Blood isn't total ass juice compared to even the weakest song on Emotion. S*** is annoying as hell. Emotion isn't saddled with a bunch of cult of personality garbage and filler songs, just 12 great songs that are produced well.

Where did this idea that Carly is a critical darling come from anyway? Her average metascrore is 76 and the allegedly beloved pop cornerstone this thread is about only has a 77. Pitchfork gave it a 7.4. And that's Conde Nast Pitchfork who gives every album between a 6 and an 8 unless they have an issue with the artist behind it.

Carly is honestly underrated critically. She put out an excellent album this year that didn't get the attention or a***ysis it deserved because of how it was marketed. Who is it, exactly, that's touting her as a genius these days? Her fans? That's every fanbase.

there’s like 2 weak songs on 1989 max, and EMOTION is the token pop album for niggas that aren’t even into pop like that the album is great but the overarching point is that it gets so much smoke blown up it’s ass because of what it represents (aka anti-mainstream, doesn’t threaten someone’s fragile masculinity) compared to the other pop girlies like Demi, Selena and Taylor lol

ironically enough you’re talking about strawmen when no one said anything about 1989 inventing tolerable pop music, the point is that there were other albums out and about that were arguably on par with EMOTION if not worlds better

regardless, CRJ is great but she couldn’t blend hits and songs with actual emotional depth like Wildest Dreams or hell This Love, there’s levels to this s***

you know full and damned well there’s a different lens to listening to CRJ versus throwing on some Selena Gomez or Demi Lovato dawg lmao

Carly's crowd was top 3 queerest I've been in, trailing only Erasure and Jessie Ware post-What's Your Pleasure, so I'm not sure where this hetero male fanbase s*** is coming from

I maintain Emotion is praised ahead of whatever Selena and Demi are putting out because it's a better album. Those artists don't put work in on album-length statements like Carly does and the album format is appreciated most by music nerds, who are, I concede, often straight white men. But her fanbase is much more diverse than that.

    I don't like 1989 or Emotion A Or B

My ears do not find any joy in listening to 'pop' though, it just doesn't work

obviously there's pop songs I like and even pop albums but I hear blank space etc and it's just bland to me

im starting to think you’re being obtuse man im ngl

out of all of the other pop artists that dropped within that year, Taylor, Demi, Selena, hell even Sia to an extent, CRJ is the LEAST threatening to consume due to her not being “popular” among women (like that) in addition to not being as overtly geared towards that audience in comparison to the aforementioned acts

no one is saying that CRJ doesn’t have a queer audience, we are saying she’s the SAFEST choice out of ALL of the OTHER pop artists of that time, which is why people blow so much smoke up her ass
