We are born with genes we didnt choose, in an environment we didn't choose. These circumstances affect greatly (or completely) the way we make our first decisions, upon which all our future decisions will be based, so how would there be a free will?
If you believe there is free will, where does the ability to independently decide our actions come from?
idk if i explained my thoughts in a way that is understandable, kinda hard ngl
Everything is predetermined by the sands of time. There is a way to overcome & break the leashes of your eternal fate however, and that’s by -
Wait.
Do you hear that? Shh.. The intro riffs to “I stand alone” by Godsmack? .. ?
ITS HERE. I MUST RUN.
I mean I do whatever the f*** I want. Sure if I was born somewhere else I'd probably have a whole different personality and mannerism. Different values and morals to abide by as well probably but it is what it is were all products of our environment to an extent. Doesn't mean I can't move somewhere else now or partake In a different lifestyle etc...
just because there's a basis for who you are doesn't mean you can't decide action after that initial point
we all start somewhere, you shape yourself
cause humans aren’t slave to their desires and environment and are capable of higher reasoning and logic, of course they shape what you’ll do but it doesn’t determine let’s say u have a sugar addiction and u see a donut it’s not gonna be a 100% chance you’ll eat it, it’s more like 80/20 or whatever leaving room for ur choice
just because there's a basis for who you are doesn't mean you can't decide action after that initial point

How can you be so sure you made a decision tho?
Free will / free speech is an intangible concept created by white European philosophers to rationalize rich capitalists become detached from their social responsibilities through capitalism and colonialism
Free will isn’t really a thing. You’ll always be tied to the community and society you inhabit and all that you do will be caused by it and effective upon it.
It’s better to first solve material problems of your community that collectively inhibit the concept of freedom (social needs, shelter, sustenance, transportation) than to immediately grant the intangible, lofty concepts of free will

We make decisions everyday big and little. Sure we're forced to do some things like work and stuff. But you're free to quit or look for a better job, or one you enjoy etc...

Everybody certainly feel like they can do whatever they f*** they want. I do too most of the time, but do you really believe you have the ability to make decisions completely by yourself without being affected by your past experiences? and what is that self that is "free" made up of, and where did it come from?

We don’t have free will. Are you a Sam Harris listener, by chance?

The free will vs determinism debate goes way beyond capitalism vs communism. You’re not ONLY tied to to your community and society, it goes all the way back to the very beginning of the universe. Nobody and nothing has free will

I would argue you don’t even have the freedom to whether you want to reply to this post or not. It’s all an illusion of freedom

i have used his app waking up a bit, and i think i might have seen some short youtube clip of his while searching around for videos on this subject. Does he have more extensive talks about this?

this is assuming that the movement of every particle that has ever existed since the singularity can be accounted for, but quantum mechanics shows that particles can act in unpredictable ways depending on the kind of experiment conducted by the observer

Sure external influence will play a role in your decisions always but that doesn't mean I didn't make those decisions. Some influences are out of your control you could be born into a household/neighborhood where gangs and d**** are the norm and there's no way that's not affecting you. That's why the ogs will always look out for kids with talent like the kid that can rap or the tall kid that's really good at basketball they don't want them getting sucked into the bullshit. But at the end of the day if they want to bullshit there gonna bullshit. And I'm sure there's hundreds of lil factors that play a role in someone's decision making but at the end of the day you have to take action you gotta pick left or right and move a foot forward or backwards to get somewhere there's no way around it. And I don't know about you but no one is a a holding a gun to my head telling me what to do and sure I've done a bunch of dumbass s*** and suffered consequences for it but most of the time It was my fault.

what do u mean when u say our initial decisions are the basis for all our future decisions? i think that priors influence a person greatly and probably in a lot/most of their decisions, but "all" future decisions isn't making sense to me

Do you think it's pre determined? Like things are set in a stone. We're just walking a path that was already laid for us. I think that kind of thinking is dangerous and false.
