this is assuming that the movement of every particle that has ever existed since the singularity can be accounted for, but quantum mechanics shows that particles can act in unpredictable ways depending on the kind of experiment conducted by the observer

I think we label things as “unpredictable” when we can’t YET predict them. I wouldn’t say that proves that free will exists

Do you think it's pre determined? Like things are set in a stone. We're just walking a path that was already laid for us. I think that kind of thinking is dangerous and false.

Yes I believe that. Why do you think is dangerous?

what do u mean when u say our initial decisions are the basis for all our future decisions? i think that priors influence a person greatly and probably in a lot/most of their decisions, but "all" future decisions isn't making sense to me

I mean where else would they come from?

Well its not a fun thought, and it's a thought that conflicts with the idea of punishment for ones actions. Kinda dangerous in that way.

I do think one should be held accountable for ones actions though, even though i feel like everything is predetermined

Free will in the sense that you have the ability to look outside of your place or role in society. You have self-awareness, you aren’t driven solely by instinct.

There's no way man. I can put all my energy into music. Or I can channel it into art. Or none of it and just work all day everyday and not worry about s*** but paying my bills and getting by. I think we're incredibly complex I think we live in a society that wants us to behave a certain way and were constantly navigating systems/institutions that also want us to behave a certain way or believe certain things. But you're gonna align yourself with whatever appeals to you you're gonna listen to the music you like wear the clothes you want etc...

I think the concept of a pre determined outcome and fate is dangerous because It creates complacency or even self pity like woe is me this is the cards that were dealt to me. Where as believing that you can make your decisions can be powerful I can choose to create to inspire and motivate, I can choose to change because I'm a piece of s*** and I want to do better.

    I agree.

And even if it’s not fun, not nice and dangerous, that doesn’t make it false.

At the end of the day, we all pretending we do have free will. But it was also determined that we were going to pretend that lol so who the f*** knows what’s going to happen tomorrow

People should be held accountable for their actions, but they should also be respected as human beings who’ve undergone their own experiences, and as we know people react and respond in different ways.

Being human is complicated, and I don’t think pushing everything through a binary good vs bad does any favors, because often times it’s surface level and doesn’t dig into the issues that create circumstances that lead to intolerable actions.

I haven't seen any arguments on this other than "it feels like im making decisions", im not trying to be correct, but the whole world is built upon the idea of free choice and people treat each other like there is a completely free choice of everyones actions, which made me post this to see if anyone could explain it to me

Absolutely everything is pre determined (imo). Now, that also means that you don’t even get to choose whether you believe that everything is pre determined or not. IF believing so makes you a self pity or dangerous person (it’s not my case), that also wouldn't be under your control.

In a deterministic world, some people are blessed and some are cursed. One could say that those who believe in free will are blessed, just like when people say that ignorance is bliss.

In my personal experience, being a hard determinist has not really changed anything. At the end of the day, I still act as if I could make decisions, I can’t help it, I’m still human at the end of the day.

I agree mostly with Sam Harris’ points here. We feel like we are making our own decisions everyday, but we really aren’t in a way. If you make a mistake, then ask yourself later why you made the decision you did, it’s more or less “idk, I thought it was right at the time!”
