It's been going on even before COVID-19, my dude. You just don't see or hear about it because Asians aren't all that united due to feuds between the ethnic groups, so they don't come together, rally, and protest nearly as much as you'd expect. Older Asian immigrants also don't really care that much about racism, so they're not complaining because anything is better than whatever they went through in their homelands.

There IS anti-Asian racism in the United States and there always has been. You just don't hear about it.

you'll be just fine OP. a lot of places in East Asia are fine. Haven't been to SK but I've been to China years back and it was some of the most rememberable weeks of my life and can't wait to head back one day. Tryna live in Taiwan next year if i get accepted into this program

only thing to really remember are that these are homogenous societies (mostly because they stayed to themselves most of their histories and didn't forcibly remove people to become their slaves) so some areas might not be as used to darker skin. If you're living in on of the more popular cities tho this won't be much of an issue---there's tons of foreign exchange and tourism so its not new.

As long as you remember that any time you travel to a country that is pretty homogeneous, you’ll get stares or funny looks. In some countries they’ll be more discreet, in others, they’ll stare unabashedly. If you go in expecting this, and decide not to be offended or take it personally, you can have fine visits in most countries. But if you go and allow yourself to be put off by the perceived rudeness, it can spoil a visit
