France has a regional history of comics and cartoons.
You know what we call them?
French comics and French cartoons.
You know what we don't call them?
Bandes dessinées and dessin animé.
You know why?
Because we aren't French!
You know who calls them that?
People speaking in French!
we have many, many french cognates
there are no cognates from japanese to english because the two languages originated entirely separately

Japanese: anime
english: croissant
french: croissant
japanese: kurowassan
Easier to just say and type anime than it is to say Japanese cartoons or Japanese animation.

I'll accept this answer before any of the Youtube essay stuff. Guy brought up "cognates".
Yeah man, I didn't know what Godzilla was until someone called him a kaiju. Before that I thought he was a monster.

Kaiju is a type of monster though. Like a giant monster. That’s what it’s called in Japan.
But I feel your overall point though. Some Weebs try and throw in Japanese words when it’s not really necessary

"Godzilla is a monster"
"Actually he's a big Japanese monster"
Yeah, no s***!
We can't keep justifying this fetish as an exercise in academic writing.

What’s your take on American people who go out of their way to say football when they mean soccer? That’s a similar phenomenon

Football should be the game where you kick the ball a lot. The rest of the world agrees.
But we suck at it, so until that changes it's soccer

bro cognates is literally the reason tho. because english is a romantic language alongside french we share a ton of words in common. we share zero words in common with japanese. (rather, we shared zero words in common until we just took their words and made them our words too) so of course when it is easy we'll just use the japanese word and it then becomes a cognate. anime is anime. croissant is croissant. its that simple i dont rly know what ur tryna do with this thread
helps that we share an alphabet with french too. nobody typing kanji except giga weebs

It is absolutely not the reason.
