  • if I'm referring to something japanese and it will be more easily understood if I use the japanese term then I'll use it

    anime
    umami
japanese food ie: ramen, onigiri, karaage, etc
    all the japanese p*** terms
    japanese media tropes

  • Aug 31, 2024

^if the term catches on for whatever reason, usually ease of marketing, its whats gonna be used by most people its how language works

  • Aug 31, 2024

also languages take from each other all the time man

no one in the english speaking world gaf about french comics or animation

  • Aug 31, 2024

I feel like we call them by their Japanese names because they're so different to Western animation/comics that just using that term wouldn't take that into account

Au contraire, I think “Anime” has a certain je ne sais quois

I really like the French phrase

    Nostalgie de la boue

    And its English translation

    Nostalgia for mud

yearning for pig consciousness—wallowing in mud and loving it

bro cognates is literally the reason tho. because english is a romantic language alongside french we share a ton of words in common. we share zero words in common with japanese. (rather, we shared zero words in common until we just took their words and made them our words too) so of course when it is easy we'll just use the japanese word and it then becomes a cognate. anime is anime. croissant is croissant. its that simple i dont rly know what ur tryna do with this thread

I’ve actually been studying this a bit. French is a Romance language but English is a Germanic language similar to German and Dutch. Anglo Saxons from the coast of Germany and the Netherlands came to England, I can’t remember why but that’s where our weird German side comes from.

But French was introduced into English by the Normans from the Normandy coast of France when they invaded and took control.

French became the language of the courts and high society eventually until words became integrated into our own language. Sooner or later, that kingdom fell and things reverted back to being English but of course those words are still with us today. Allot of words like democracy, culture, tax, prison, mayor, music, war, faith, attorney etc etc all come from French

these things are matters of context at the time of adoption who gives af. Gastronomy has many french words because french cuisine was dominating at the time the words were adopted. france was not an international powerhouse of comics when that market was developed.

that's why father/mother/son/daughter come from german and uncle/nephew/aunt/cousin come from latin because only high society cared about extended family

but also there were two french dialects fighting in england the norman one and the one used by latter kings of french origins so this is why a lot of words have the same french origin but with slight differences and different meanings, like guarantee and warranty

and words for dead animals come from french because that's what you eat but words for living animals come from german because that's what you know as a farmer
