why are these 3 ppl itt giving each other pats on the back
Facts brother. We gotta keep our eye on the bigger picture, our country gotta be United. That assclown Donald divided everyone and made it feel like our enemies are our countrymen, and not these f***ing lunatics in Russia, Iran, and North Korea
The thing is that is inherently a political view because it implies the status quo here is fine and internal issues are not a threat, it's the external problems that are the bigger threat. I'm noticing a lot of people in his thread that are leaning towards the answer of "no political disagreements can impact my friendship" seem to be on that side. You can't answer the question from that perspective because you're assuming that perspective is/should be shared but that's just another policy to agree/disagree.
okay so i'm supposed to shun trump supporters. then i'm also supposed to shun friends of trump supporters. what about people who defend people who defend them ? that's a whole lot of drama. i'd rather talk to my "enemy" and see how they feel about all this. before we talked, we both hated each other. after talking, we both learn

that's the way i look at it

You're confusing not being friends with someone to shunning them. You are also implying that in all political discussions, both sides have something to learn. That's just not true, if you believe A because B, when in reality B is false then what is there to learn?
Just giving you some perspective.

i just dont see how any problems can be solved internally when both halves of the population view eachother as irredeemable a******s and refuse to even interact.
meanwhile the people at the top agree on every issue: whatever makes them the most money. regardless of which party's in office these people will get what they want because the lower classes are busy pointing the finger at each other.

well i do believe that both sides always have something to learn. look, if i'm talking to someone radicalized down a far right rabbit hole, every second of conversation, i learn what the hell got them there and i see warning signs. even if i hate their guts, it helps me learn about the atmosphere of this country. that's why people interview warlords, terrorists, criminals, etc. we can still learn even if we don't like them.
that's my take. but as far as shunning vs having friends, i'm not gonna wait for an election and find out who someone is voting for, then stop being their friend. otherwise, was i ever even their friend? can't they explain themselves? no hate your way
and this is where i'll conclude all this. i will never be friends with someone who is racist, homophobic, or a blatant bigot.

depends what you mean i guess. theres some political views that are portrayed in media as being racist when the people who hold them arent considering race at all. a lot of the discussion around police comes to mind first.
i just mean that true racism isnt, or at least shouldnt be political. personally i think its gross that the correlation has grown so much in the last year.
This audobook explains what you're hinting at ^
The growing correlation between race and politics isn't accidental

But is the solution then to just ignore any domestic issues? There should be a dialogue but you have to find some common ground for that which there is getting harder and harder to find due to misinformation and echo-chambers. Example: How can we start a dialogue on voter suppression if one side thinks that there is nothing wrong with the electoral system and the other side believes that there is a conspiracy to steal the election? It's a difficult topic and I think people are just kind of ignoring it itt.
Try not to change people’s minds about anything. Just present information when necessary.

not cutting off friends ≠ ignoring important issues

Yeah but in that case you're learning what causes someone to adopt a view point, not what validates their view points which is what I implied.
Yeah that's your decision, what I put in OP is a question not an argument.

Where did I mention cutting friends off? Read previous posts I replied to the guy questioning the common ground he mentioned for discussion.
When I was in my twenties I didn't care if ppl knew my views. My political views are extreme and would be censored on most platforms. I don't tell ppl what I really think unless their family, now.
