my favorite mixing engineer is manny marroquin because he brings this special weirdness to his mixes that really elevates the power of the production without trying to do too much, and that’s what engineering should offer—a finished product that matches the artist’s intent
op is still kinda right tho
mainstream hip hop is terrified of clipping/distortion. it's why the official release always sounds a little worse than the snippet. the punch is gone a little
Rap mixes today just sound so thin these days, very little depth. Drums/bass is emphasized but the way drums hit nowadays is so boring. A return to hallow boom drums would be cool

And the voice loud af
And the voice loud af
usually the artist's fault tbh
the sessions i do i usually have the voice louder during recording so they can hear themselves but turn it down for the mixdown. but usually that's w the artist still in the building and 9 times out of 10 they want their voice louder.
i mean if that's what they want 🤷♂️
Rough like MBDTF.
Organic like Dangelos Voodoo
Lively like Sunday Services record “Weak”
Overall, it should sound cohesive to the artists direction. Mixers/engineers like Ali can mix within any direction. Same with Russell Elvado

excellent job on swimming
i dont give a s*** about the mix or master honestly
I was listening to that jai paul leak back nonstop in 2012 when it sounded like it came from a radio
daniel johnston is one of my fav songwriters and his songs mixes sound like s***. As long as the music itself is good idc.
Then you got glossy s*** like RAM and pristine four tet masters. its all relative. And what works for the artist
like on some dark s***
ye’s verse on so appalled >>>>> need quality like that more outside of underground/abstract rap
Good balance
Good separation of elements and instruments
A good mix has a sense of depth and width to it
hip hop Mixes are louder than ever and u saying loud and dynamic in the same sentence made every engineer chuckle
The louder a song is the more dynamics have to be compromised and vice versa
You’rr using incorrect terminology to describe your thoughts
Okay so help me understand something.
I always find certain artists/labels/groups have what I would call very 'quietly' mixed music without necessarily having a crispness you might associate with that. So for example I've def felt a lot of young thug music has been very quiet so to speak where I need to put volume 2-3 notches higher than other stuff just to hear it well over atmospheric noise. I feel like nobody ever refers to this so idk if my ears just don't work but is there a reason for this? It seems like it doesn't serve any purpose to me!!
Conversely I know ppl complain about loudness war stuff and I know Kanye seems to have his music mixed v loud but I almost always enjoy this quality to his music too? like I was listening to some choice donda cuts the other day and it was really hitting how booming it all was
Like I feel like I can hear this stuff and appreciate what I like and don't like but I don't get the actual technical reasons for it
op is still kinda right tho

You can’t have the type of clipping and distortion that you’re talking about and still get a loud enough master to be competitive with other mainstream tracks. It’s a give or take. It’s not possible.
i don’t really care how it’s mixed, but i think it’s cool when artists have their own unique mix style
die for my b**** as well as a lot of other baby keem songs have that to me - the mix is good simply because it makes his music stand out even if he’s taking direct influence from another artist

people can turn up their volume, uh
stop chasing loudness
voices clear
drums gotta hit
im not a mix w**** bro I dont care
Lol facts and it seems like how people grade “mixing” ends up being subjective anyway.
