if your music tastes/artists are right, the acts you like typically will just mesh into other genres naturally.
It's never a good experience to try to force yourself into listening to another genre/type of music you never grew up on nor did you ever have a naturally liking for in the first place.
Yeah idk I was a huge rock fan as a very little kid started with Green Day->Pink Floyd->Linkin Park->Fall Out Boy then I just got into rap and I stopped listening to all of that in high school
Feels nice to be getting back into it.. Linkin Park aged like s*** but pre-breakup Fall Out Boy is still my favorite band
Not trying to shame anyone who only listens to one genre or anything Im just realizing I dont want that to be me u know
not just @op (and this is from a kid who's favorite types of music is hip hop, R&B/neosoul, house music, and jazz growing up) but I really hate when being a fan of hip hop/R&B is looked at as "putting yourself in a box" and when you start liking more than just that it's seen as a "progression."
Like hip hop and R&B are just for simpletons. It aint lost on me that there's a racial factor that's played into it (not saying most of yall ITT that are saying this are playing that, but there is some implicit bias.)

the way you worded the title definitely comes across as shade even if you didn't intend to come off that way btw.

I BEEN SAYING THIS thank you there is nothing wrong with liking just rap
Hip-hop right now is woat, the genre should die tbh

yea there's def a white eurocentric idea of what "artistic" music is
i grew up on the same s*** and felt a reactive stance to rock my whole life but eventually looking into the artists i f***ed with i found branches into rock that i enjoyed and at some point somewhat felt like OP so i get that too
Do it if you want don’t pretend to like something cause another group people like it

my fault I really didnt mean that at all
Id probably be making this thread but backwards if I never listened to Kanye and just got exposed to rap for the first time
I love rap and R&B by far my favorite music and not for simpletons at all I just want to expand my personal tastes thats all

he is not wrong
the new acts in rap that are superstars do not make great projects

Even those who just like Rock, Pop, Jazz etc are essentially boxing themselves in, there's tons of genres out there to explore.
drop literally any reccomendations from any genre at all I'll check it all out
Electronic: "Worlds" by Porter Robinson, "Discovery" by Daft Punk, "Hi This Is Flume" by Flume, "Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides" by SOPHIE.
Just to like triple clarify theres nothing wrong with only liking these genres at all I just kinda regret missing out on other genres for a while
Never too late OP

This is a natural progression for kids growing up in 2021. Rap, r&b is what you grow with then you leave that bubble and want to branch out. No coincidence there are more rock, pop, reggaeton, etc.. threads on KTT now than ever before. Kids are growing up. Rap is also at its worst point ever so theres so FOMO going on
this is highkey racist ngl

Best way I found is listen crossover artists
So for example
Listen to RATM if your interested in metal or try something like BFT if your more interested in going into more experimental side of electronic music

To you.
let's make that a new habit on KTT is to post opinions without trying to claim they're facts. Cause you are definitely in the minority here.
