Ehh, that would eliminate one problem but spawn 5 more
Care to elaborate?
Say one nice thing about communism and the fbi gonna put your ass on a list Dont give these f***s too much information.
Good idea tbh, but I’m not tryna risk having my identity stolen through my fuccin ig
lmao im a brown communist you insane weirdo
arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say
Basically agree with this take despite posting a contrary one in the thread but I’d probably just append that one of the biggest issues in a current context is the ability for companies (or governments depending on where you live) to completely destroy your life regardless of if it’s technically associated with your name or not. If there was actual individual financial and social independence separate from establishments (assuming that’s even theoretically possible in practice), it really wouldn’t be as big of a deal IMO. Nothing to do with not valuing privacy but rather the distinctions of certain overlapping aspects of modern society. Like a great example of this is Donziger - he exposed and sued Chevron and they ruined his life and abused modern establishment protocols. So if he had been anonymous theoretically that couldn’t have happened. But at the same time it’d also have been fine for him not to have been anonymous had society just not been formed in such an abusive monopolistic manner

Stalking cases would skyrocket Hordes of weirdos would camp before every workplace in the USA to meet their mid-follower-range IG obsessions
If you aren’t posting racist or homophobic s*** then you shouldn’t have to worry
Yup that's the only reason we don't want private companies to have our governments :oblivious:
Ehh, that would eliminate one problem but spawn 5 more
Basically. like nothing i want more than to expel racists and bigots but it’s the precedent
And plus do we wanna give these tech companies that power anyway
Dumb f***ing trend. No the internet should not be only for those that are willing to be identified, what a dumb f***ing take in general. This ain't even personal I'm pretty open and have my full name on most my s***
I think the sentiment is well intended but yeah not really well thought out

I don’t think weirdos would risk verifying their identity so they’d prob drop social media all together.
Maybe they could do a face verification with holding their username on a piece of paper

I understand having this feature for certain niches/political social media etc but overall just dumb and only idiots agree

Love your Avi

This truly my only concern about this s***.
I already know this would be used to further political agendas and not hold people accountable for problematic s*** they say behind a username

Forcing real names on every account would have insane chilling effect on free speech, many people would conduct themselves like PR accounts, which would defeat the purpose of social media
A compromise would be to allow like 3 to 5 accounts per person per platform, and the real identity is not visible to the front-end users and gets stored encrypted on the back-end for legal pruposes.
1. But I can't trust a private company with little to no legal oversight with this type of power tbqh. Banks for example have heavy regulations, what does Twitter have ?
2. They would access the names for any bullshit, the US especially is very lax. I would say you should need a court order to find out who posted it, and use it for real s*** not someone being mean online
Don't just single out Idris, so many UK media figures are doing this atm, it's a terrible idea, so many people use the internet to connect with people in ways they wouldn't want associated with their real name, think LGBTQ+ people in repressive areas
I understand having this feature for certain niches/political social media etc but overall just dumb and only idiots agree
Yeah… I mean if tech companies were truly a neutral social institution then I would be more included to the idea but between cyber securityd it being used as a form of black mail from a political perspective, s*** dude that sounds scary as hell
What's your government name pal
man didnt say the entire internet, just social media, I dont think that includes forums

And it's just pointless like I said earlier, what about certain LGBTQ users for example who are still not open about that publicly. Doesn't make any sense
