It's kind of is though? Honestly why would you even want to listen to a lyrical rapper if you didn't think the person was cool or smart. It's like taking advice from a dumbass.

I feel like 3k and OutKast in general is a bad example here because they were never really respected like that until later in their careers. Like no one ever really thought Andre was that cool until he became all quirky and started switching his style up...

In the black community yeah because dudes thought he was gay for dressing like that hence the Return Of The G

I feel like being "cool" actually plays way more of a part in todays music than it did before, strange because we seem to have a shortage of "cool" artists present day

I hope I'm still on the right track on this discussion cause I kind of forgot what we initially started talking about lol

Honestly why would you even want to listen to a lyrical rapper if you didn't think the person was cool or smart.

Except a lot of political rappers with inaccurate ideas in the 90s amassed mass followings lol

And you rewriting history like niggas wasnt looking for 3k verses throughout the 2000s is wild but you got it.

So why is the nigga that drake swaggerjacking not bigger then lol

Because his music is not that good bro. I like Smino but lets be honest that crooning lyrical weird voice s*** gets old. Drake makes way more accessible music for the masses and his main subject in his songs is usually relationships and love which people can relate to these days.

Why Smino isn't a superstar seems pretty obvious... Dude is a good artist and rapper but he obviously doesn't make music that is going to attract the masses. His s*** is too experimental and backpacker. Plus his style is honestly too cool for most people to comprehend. Drake makes it work because he does a s***ty copy cat version of Smino's style that regular nerds can try to emulate

Regular kids not copying that Smino sauce

Well yeah, people had less access to information through the internet back then so it's only natural people would subscribe to more "inaccurate ideas"

And nah bro, Big Boi was the more respected one in the group until Andre started dating Erykah and switching his style up.

You're being facetious. Yes Smino talks about love too but Drake does it in a immature teenage way that most sheltered kids can also relate to lol.

I accepted that niggas really won't appreciate dudes like Q-Tip, CD Ye, Mos, or someone like Common nowadays.

Especially when society and hip-hop has pushed for niggas to model their image and sound to be like Wayne.

The problem with conscious rappers is they're all hypocrites which is why it's hard to take them seriously lol

Common always kicking that love s*** while being a known womanizer

Mos Def being an insane person with that global passport s***

DOOM lowkey is street to me but not like what you’d typically say

I put him in a Sean Price, Ghostface, Raekwon type category tbh

Yeah going back and listening to him deep diving thru all his projects a few years ago its crazy he has the fanbase and “lore” he does but he really just a rambling street rapper who picked a certain type of beats and cover art lmaoo that ngga is really almost just Cam’ron dressed out of a thrift store

I was born in 95 so obviously I didn't have my ear to the streets back then but from my understanding is that Big Boi was the more respected rapper in the group until Love Below

And whats crazy is respectfully to the dead daniel never struck me as that type of guy just from what i saw. Nobody ever called him out for being a “capper” or whatever the equivalent was at the time. I do know he spiraled into homelessness a bit after his brothers passing so maybe thats where he got those vibes
