I do think JID having too much of image of modern day rapper is probably holding people back from being interested in him. Like I could understand why people could take a look at him and say "oh another Wayne clone"
But he’s making a great living off music
It’s not like he’s much smaller than the dudes you named were with the exception of Ye
And thats just one example I definitely think a young upcoming dude can do it even bigger but so many lyrical dudes come in with a defeatist mindset or purposely make music for a small niche which is fine if thats what u wanna do but dont cater to a niche then be mad when you don’t reach beyond that niche
If you wanna be mainstream big you gotta have women on your side. JID makes hoe scaring music.
Women are on JID side, just the girls aren't.
non conscious rappers of that era would be dudes like Brotha Lynch Hung, Spice-1, Gravediggaz lol.
RZA and grim reaper were still had moments of introspection
I also don’t like how the aspect of good and ADDICTIVE songmaking is glossed over as if this isn’t about songs at the end of the day. Like are we forgetting what songs are on College Dropout
Exactly
Stop whining and give me a Slow Jamz nigga
Come on man
He had that surround sound challenge song a while back
RZA and grim reaper were still had moments of introspection
Dudes from that generation were just more introspective in general it seems. Internet and social media has killed all introspection for Zoomers lol
When Ian is the biggest artist you know something is wrong.
Come on man
Lemme rephrase that.
The "girlies" ain't checkin for JID, but mature-minded women are on his side
He had that surround sound challenge song a while back
All you need is one catchy hook these days fr
Lemme rephrase that.

I ain't never met a non-black girl in my life who listens to JID bro
Because they literally positions themselves to be seen that way. Conscious rappers have a savior complex
Ah so moving the goalposts.
Ah so moving the goalposts.
What...? Bro you just be saying anything lol...
What goalposts were established in this conversation please remind me because I am having trouble understanding why you are coming at me like this
Ah so moving the goalposts.
He’s right though. Even if subconsciously you expect more from a Common or Kendrick than you do a Vonoff1700 type nigga
Again,
We are talking about two different concepts. I understand these guys are not popular as they should be. I'm combating the take that they'd be ridiculed for doing conscious s***
Anyway,
Trap is the dominant norm now
Gangsta rap was the dominant norm
Like someone said, we need someone to break that cycle, it will happen eventually. 5-6 years ago emo rap was huge, but all those guys died off.
Trap been the dominant genre for 20+ years
He’s right though. Even if subconsciously you expect more from a Common or Kendrick than you do a Vonoff1700 type nigga
The fact this needs to be explained and stated is insane.....
Yes we expect more from certain people who craft their public personas a certain way for years....
I ain't never met a non-black girl in my life who listens to JID bro
There's some, just not the natural public yet.
I agree 100% that image and marketing is crucial
But thats the problem right there is I feel like young lyrical rappers automatically assume they can’t have an image or marketing that people want to hear
Like maybe young lyrical rappers should try being more interesting or making better songs if they wanna get bigger, its definitely possible like Jid made a legit hit not too long ago obviously he had to build up to it but yeah
A hit that aint even a reflection of his discography and had to catch on years after the fact.

The overarching issue is that they not even given the fair chance.
F*** rap, jean dawson should be a superstar by now lol

Man no one is given a fair chance bro, life isn't fair, especially in something like entertainment
No one is given a fair chance brother, some people just get lucky, straight up
Eminem was lucky Dr. Dre discovered him or else we may not even know who the f*** he is today lol
As someone who doesn’t listen to JID regularly, answer me this honestly (people who know what a hit does and doesn’t sound like):
Is Surround Sound JID’s catchiest hook + flow + beat combo to date for a rap single? Just musically, has he had one as catchy or catchier before

I've listened to most of his music and I would honestly say that Surround Sound is the catchiest hook I've ever heard from him
