These conversations can never really go anywhere because there’s a very high level of built-in respect for artists who were in their genre first or early adopters and it’s almost impossible to ignore it
You can’t just skip over that reverence for the past, it makes it basically impossible to discuss them in a vacuum and compare them to the present, a lot of why they’re good is tied to their trailblazing
If Kendrick’s first album was in 1996 and Jay’s was in 2012 this convo would be flipped
They’re a product of their time and I feel like just saying “oh Kendrick is better because of his accolades” etc in the context of the late 2010s isn’t really fair, when Jay was first active that type of recognition from these white institutions wasn’t really even a concept and that’s just one example of why these comparisons are skewed
No.
Kenny ain’t active enough. Need more summers under his belt. Drake is active like Hov and Kenny rhymes like Hov and can put together a project.
They both not all-encompassing tho which is why they are who they are and Hov is who he is
I don’t think hip hop would’ve changed much if Kendrick never existed tbh
while it’s impossible to imagine hip hop without Jay Z
Interesting perspective
it’s reasonable to say Kendrick hasn’t had a ton of influence but I think it’s more because he’s that unique of an artist
it would have to be a classic for me to consider that. great wouldn't be enough.
but if it's as good as I hope it is, then I think kendrick will land firmly in the top 10 of all time and we can talk about where exactly people have him ranked

Making timeless music is more respectable than “running the summer”
Making timeless music is more respectable than “running the summer”
Well luckily Drake does both
I don’t praise everything he does. His discography is patchy as f***, but blueprint, black album, reasonable doubt and 4:44 are way better than Kendrick discog
Fair enough. But you’re lying to yourself saying that’s “way better” than Kendrick’s discog.
Few years ago I would’ve argued that Kendrick would eventually pass up Hov, but with how long it’s been I question if he’ll stay around and release enough to get there. But he hasn’t missed yet, and his work with pgLang can potentially solidify his argument in the future.
I feel like it wasn’t til the 2010s that Hov became consensus #1. In the mid 2000s i never would’ve thought people would ever have him over Biggie. But things change and future public opinion isn’t easy to predict.
Well luckily Drake does both
you can't be a grown man in 2022 listening to Take Care though
I’m sorry but I’m taking Black Album and Blueprint over any Kendrick album when it really comes down to it and that’s not a difficult decision
Jay has decades of culturally impactful music on his side. Basically, time is on his side.
Kendrick dropped the longest charting HipHop album of all time
Followed by the most critically acclaimed album of all time
Followed by a Pulitzer Prize winning album.
Kendrick already surpassed Jay

actually shocked theres hov praise itt but of course it took kendrick slander to get it lmao
Kendrick not surpassing Jay is not completely about longevity btw. And Kendrick is an undeniable figure in the culture, that’s not up for debate
Kendrick simply hasn’t done what Jay has done, not even up to 2000s Jay
Why would it even be a surpassing thing is my question
Snoop for example transcends everyone
He's not even known as a rapper anymore. He's just a entity
He's just Snoop Dogg
So why wouldn't snoop be the example too? Same as hov
Kendrick Lamar is the greatest rapper of all time
I understand when they put Hov though
It's like old heads mad about Lebron over Jordan
Like sure bro even if we see somebody stronger & faster than bron in the future we would be salty and hate on em too
Making timeless music is more respectable than “running the summer”
Hov has timeless music AND ran the summers. See the difference

HOV doesn't have an album better than GKMC or TPAB
Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, The Black Album, Watch the Throne are all at least as good as any of Kendricks albums. That's being generous though we all know they're better.
Vol 1-3 and Blueprint 2 are probably just as good as any of his albums.
None of this is disrespect to Kendrick he's top 10 of all time but the Hov disrespect is sad and pretentious.
