Bruh i hate when niggas gotta act like everybody gotta give the album a damn 10 thats what annoy me about the conversation around the album its no room for nuance and i love the album
But lr is better fasho

Thats real, i love that album
And those songs
I’m not sure the consensus is that it’s the best rap album ever made, more like it’s the best rap album since it came out probably
I don’t agree with that either
i feel like the context and behind the scenes s*** with the album is better than the actual music.
I feel like a lot of kanye music suffers from this. @op mentioned the importance of cult of personality in his music. When that breaks down, the music suffers a lot IMO

well yeah, clearly lol you favor MOTM 2 over it (yes I know MOTM2 came out first)

Not my favorite Kanye album but honestly Drunk N Hot Girls is one my favorite Kanye songs. It’s just so weird and dark. It just feels odd on such a bright and big sounding album. If it was reworked on Yeezus or something I think people would be more positive towards it.
I don’t disagree with the MBDTF score, but the review was off. Seemed more concerned with the album’s impact and context than the actual music. Also, the lines about his controversy were wrong too. 808s wasn’t a controversial album in the mainstream in 2007, it was just a heel turn (Ie. Drake with HN).
The Bush-Katrina line was his most controversial incident at the time. The TSwift incident just built on it and happened around the time of the release.
Day 21: Big K.R.I.T. - K.R.I.T. Wuz Here
Listened to this mixtape (or independent album) on YouTube like I should. It reminded me of the mixtape/blog era of the early 2010s. We used to get gold like this for free download. Is today's era better for artists? You blow up way faster but get left in the dust quickly. On the other hand you got rappers like Big K.R.I.T. that were hungry, put in work but will always be underrated. That is why after 3 classic mixtapes (this, Return of 4eva and 4eva in a day) he flopped with his first album and never reached the success of other notable rappers of his time.
But in that place of obscurity, lies realness. The appeal of this album is K.R.I.T.'s relatable life stories, hunger and emotion. You can feel the hunger in the rapping, you can feel the effort and soul in the production (which btw is self produced) and his singing voice in some of these hooks also hits hard. It almost feels like hanging out with him for a day and hearing stories.
I think maybe we're missing that authenticity in rap today. We still get gangsta / street rap today and we still get conscious rap but we don't get both of them together (maybe YB is the closest?) this is real southern s***, and this is real iconic mixtape era s***. Do yourself a favor and listen to a K.R.I.T. mixtape today.
Favorite songs: Country S***, Hometown Hero, Viktorious, Children of the World, Moon & Star, As Small As a Giant.

I'm aware it was a weird review, I just didn't feel right praising it and ignoring how Kanye's antics make me feel about this album and its themes retroactively so I decided to focus on this.
I love a lot of elements on this album musically like the production, the intros, outros, bridges to songs which not a lot of rap albums tend to do. It's trying really hard to be artistic and like a huge performance and it's succeeding. All the guests (well, most) and the producers are great and Kanye bringing them all together to make this perfectionist album is still impressive today. It's really just the lyrics and Kanye himself that make me conflicted. Plus I think most people here know this album pretty well and I wanted to have a new take on it.
As for fact checking what I said, I might be wrong because I went off memory and didn't actually look it up. I don't think the fans cancelled him after the Bush thing. People actually praise it today and think it was a brave statement. Taylor incident actually made him look like the bad guy, it got his tour with Lady Gaga cancelled, and he basically disappeared for a year just to make this album. And his comeback was directly after that. He didn't really have to save face after the Bush thing.
Also from what I remembered 808s & Heartbreak turned a lot of previous fans off of Kanye. I don't think HNVM did that because I don't think Drake fans stopped being fans after that. Plus the media made fun of him at the time, also because of him going into fashion and being pretentious about the music. I think the south park episode was around that time too.

In an interview KRIT said he was beginning to doubt if he was gonna make it in music and made this as his final tape hence the name krit "WUZ" here. he was one of my favorite rappers during this era

i feel like a lot of times when i listen to kanye west music i don't just listen to music i also listen to kanye west if that makes not just music. the music of a talented underdog visionary who's kinda off but endearing and not just the music. part of what makes it so hard for me to listen to him today
Bruh i hate when niggas gotta act like everybody gotta give the album a damn 10 thats what annoy me about the conversation around the album its no room for nuance and i love the album

someone told me the album wasn't even in his top 3 for kanye which i can't hate on. i feel like listening to it is like watching one of those legendary drama films. you appreciate it's greatness but you can't just bump it everyday like other music

I might spin it just once or twice a year to keep it fresh (same with other epics like TPAB), but it's a 10 when I go back to it. It's not only sprawling, ambitious and expertly executed, it's also revealing of the artist behind it and helped to redefine the artistic boundaries of mainstream hip hop. If that album isn't a 10, I don't know what is.

yeah agreed. as much as it is a popular album and had huge songs it's not the easiest thing to listen to everyday. like a guitar solo preceding a rick ross verse? kanye, elton john, rihanna, kid cudi, and fergie on one song? it's way easier for me to throw on carti or if i wanna listen to kanye he has a bunch of albums that are easier to digest than this. but it's a flawless album can't complain about any of it can only praise it
Day 21: Wiz Khalifa - Kush & OJ
I forgot but mixtapes are like the coolest thing ever. Wiz had a legendary mixtape run too. He really deserves his flowers for this era. This mixtape is basically an hour of songs entirely about weed and it rocks. Great beats great vibes from Wiz. Catchy hooks too. It's going crazy rn. Simple but hard. Not much to say but if you haven't listened to it high you haven't listened to it period.
Favorite songs: Mezmorized, Up, In Tha Cut, Visions, Still Blazin, Good Dank, Glass House.
this is a great iniciative but imma have to hate on u for giving Kush & OJ a 7/10
I do think MBDTF is one of the best rap albums of all time tho but the culture around it that it trumps every other rap album ever made and it has to be your #1 album is annoying
Don’t have to be your #1 album but denying his greatness is insane
