The Jet Age of Tomorrow - Journey to the 5th Echelon
Mid boring album with longer songs and less going on than the first album. My least favorite act on OF by far and I don't get the hype. The songs with vocals save it a little but I'd rather hear any of these rappers on different beats. To make this review more positive I recommend the following producers from this era: Flying Lotus, Burial, Shlohmo, Four Tet, Bonobo, Clams Casino, Tokimonsta, Tycho. For good instrumental music check them out.
Damn man this is one of my favorites
It was hella rough but just a melting pot for so many great influences

Yeah sorry not trying to hate it's just not for me
Good albums coming next though Nostalgia Ultra, Goblin, Purple Naked Ladies etc.
MellowHype - Blackenedwhite
This is the one. I repeat, this is the one. After not feeling Hodgy's releases and verses before, this album shows a lot of growth for him and Left Brain, who drops the hardest production so far. It's just so grimey and Hodgy raps on it with a lot of energy. This feels like what a OF project should sound like. Dark, electronic with aggressive flows. One of the best albums so far. Hodgy really likes rapping about killing cops lol.
Fav songs: Primo, 64, Hell, Deaddeputy, Loco, Chordaroy.
Easily one of the best OF projects imo and I wasnt even a huge Hodgy fan
He was pretty locked in on this
Frank Ocean - nostalgia, ULTRA.
#1 mixtape that should be on streaming. This is so good and it’s been a while I actually forgot. This is pretty lighthearted for a Frank album and we get chill songs on here, and a lot of range for early Frank from autotune songs to a Coldplay cover. Still this album has heart and good deep writing in songs like Swim Good, and Frank’s 80s/90s indie inspired sound and his style of singing is really cool and carries it. Weakest thing about it is maybe the vocals themselves which sound a little flat but he mostly sings in his range and the musical style compliments his voice. Overall great and best mixtape yet. Though he would end up being better ofc. Btw can’t believe Eagles sued him. That is a legendary cover.
Fav songs: Strawberry Swing, Novacane, We All Try, There Will Be Tears, Swim Good.
Tyler, The Creator - Goblin
This album is like a movie that you watched when you were younger and you really like but you know is kinda bad. This is my first introduction to OFWGKTA, most specifically the video for Yonkers, but at the time the album was out and everybody was talking about it and catching up to the label's releases. At the time I only listened to the popular records but this one really hit me and I remember listening all the time despite not really being "emo" and having dark thoughts I just thought it was some cool s***.
I really like the idea of it, in a sense this symbolizes the whole era, after a lot of mixtapes and building the sound this is a more professionally sounding album expanding on it and way darker than ever, with the most edgy and offensive lyrics he could think of, a lot of trauma dumping, the album starting and ending with a therapy session and like an intervention near the ending where he ends up killing the other OF members...
So ideally this would be a classic album but listening to it now it's obvious some of the ideas were good but weren't quite there yet (like Fish), some of the lyrics are a little corny with how over the top they are, and the production sometimes makes you appreciate the more striped back B****** production a bit more.
However, the highs are highs. There are songs when Tyler is being edgy and aggressive with his performance and kick ass, and some songs have interesting lyrical themes. Overall I'd say this is iconic for what it is, but not classic and not one of the better albums here. It just goes all out on this sound, for better or for worse.
Fav songs: Yonkers, She, Nightmare, Sandwitches, Burger.

Did you mean to say "Eagles" sued him, not Coldplay, right?

My bad fixing. Thought it was Coldplay. F*** Eagles!
Goblins coming out was a huge f***ing day for me. Pretty sure I had either ordered the CD or bought it at Best Buy? Skipped school and hotboxed my friend’s Volvo listening to it front to back

No biggie 😄🍻
F*** Eagles indeed lol
You reminded me this hilarious scene from Big Lebowski
PS. kudos for the thread idea! I like how you talk about each album, its characteristics, and keeping it short and sweet! 🍻

!https://youtu.be/-JlmvtAHhncYeah I don't have too much to say about each album. Just my general vibe and feelings and like it when ppl here share their thoughts too. So far I'd say this era is a little overlooked and very special.

Spoiling my review but channel orange is perfect bro
Had a long drive today and listened to 2 albums:
Domo Genesis - Under the Influence
The Internet - Purple Naked Ladies
So I was under the influence for Under the Influence and it’s pretty decent but didn’t do much for me, pretty forgettable normal early 2010s mixtape and made me want to listen to some of the original songs instead (like Boss’ Life s***’s hard).
Purple Naked Ladies, I really expected to love this record and tell you about how underrated it is, but I guess I have something against Matt Martians because this album sucks and about as bad as the Jet age of tomorrow stuff. It’s a little better because of Syd’s vocals and more R&B qualities, but it’s still some off key experimental s*** I’m not feeling. I like The Internet’s later stuff but would avoid this album.
