Essentially a mixture of fusion jazz, adult contemporary, some post-disco, some funk, some Brazilian music and pop. Great style and era
You have great music taste @op but you should listen to these songs and check out the albums:

!https://youtu.be/J3xcLmS31FE!https://youtu.be/yH9KelZrUu8that first song reminds me of Club Tropicana by Wham
any albums you recommend that i check out?
i'm not sure if it's just me being cynical, but it just reminds me of gentrified rnb from the 70s/80s. it's like the auditory version of those dropship shirts that you see on IG with the anime girl holding a gun in front of a Mazda RX7...shit just doesn't sit right lmao
F*** lol. Now that you’ve said this I can’t I hear it.

Yeah man lol. But I think they have some good songs but thinking about it Leon Ware put out an album in the 90’s and it reminds me of city pop

I’m glad for you!
Yeah I feel u ppl are just obsessed with japanese s***
People said and say the same thing about African American culture in other countries when they don’t ‘get’ hip hop, jazz etc. maybe try to appreciate the music for what it is and cultural context it came from. saying stuff like this just comes across as ignorance
that first song reminds me of Club Tropicana by Wham
any albums you recommend that i check out?
heaven beach by anri
mignonne and sunshower by taeko onuki
miki matsubara's discog
request by mariya takeuchi (also has a great discog)
lanai by yu hayami
If you appreciate pop music in general you’ll find city pop is just another deep well to pull from. Kingo Hamada, Cindy, Junko, Momoko Kikuchi, Taeko Ohnuki, Anri, Tatsuro Yamashita, Miki Matsubara, Takako Mamiya, Mariya Takeuchi, Toshiki Kadomatsu. They’ve all got hits and great full albums for days, blissful music for the summer and winter, with great atmosphere and gripping melodies. You can hear the influence of American music, particularly Michael Jackson, but the creativity shouldn’t be solely defined by that cross-cultural interaction
oh yea this ones more recent but soul lady by yukika as well
I don’t get the hype either, it’s kitsch as f*** tbh and people only vibe to it cause they think they should
It’s wild how people just say empty words w zero justification bc it’s about something they don’t personally connect to. Art lovers should try to practice more openness rather than all this reactionary posting I see all the time
