thats clearly not what hes saying, hes saying people shouldnt rate albums highly they themselves dont like but feel theyre obligated to like because of some context of objectivity. like basically its fine if you like something, but at the same time you should be honest if you personally like it more than something else, not if its "objectively" better or not.

That literally is what he’s saying

Hes roasting people for even putting a highly acclaimed project in their top 5 and assuming they clearly are just d***riding

he's using it as an example bruh not everything is completely literal, conversations have context

you think if somebody told him they love NERD and he asked what he loved about them and they couldn’t actually explain it because they’re cappin, he wouldn’t clown them?

he been on this “like what you like and figure out why you like it” s*** for years lol and logically it makes sense. why would that be a facade and not a genuine feeling lmao

im sayin i doubt he would ask what they liked abt NERD at all, I doubt he'd press the issue. because he likes NERD, and it's not unbelievabe to him for a kid to love NERD. but it is unbelievable to him that a kid would love Wu Tang

  • Your Love Is King

I don’t think Tyler dislikes Wu tang? Bro literally takes so much inspiration from RZAs beats

idk what his take on wu tang is but it seems pretty clear the dude thinks wu-tang's music is not good enough to have young kids loving it

if you watch any video of him talking about music, the convo never ends at “i like insert artist

he’ll always talk about what he loves about it and the other party would have to reply with what they like in order for it to continue as a genuine convo.

i know tyler loves NERD but i think he knows just like we know that NERD music is niche and not for everyone’s ear, just like wu tang isn’t for everyone’s ear. so it’s hard to believe from what we’ve heard and seen from him that his brain works like “i don’t like it, so i don’t get how other people could like it”. especially given his “like what you like” movement he been pushing for a decade

that's a lot of words, and i don't even disagree w most of them

but end of the day, tyler refuses to believe that kids who say they love wu-tang are being genuine. seems like he doesn't think too highly of wu tang 🤷‍♂️

insane because so many skate and graff heads i know absolutely love wu tang or definitely went through a phase in their formative years, me included

like yeah none of us lived that life they were rapping about, but the songs became the theme to living life - grimy, dirty and kinda off kilter

what's so ridiculous is there's definitely ppl out there who only f*** w NERD performatively bc Tyler told them Pharrell was cool in the 00s. but if one of those kids came up to tyler on some "In Search Of... is one of the best albums ever made" just to sound cool, tyler wouldn't bat an eye.

this isn't abt performative enjoyment or abt how young kids not supposed to like old s***, it's just abt Tyler not liking wu tang lmao

Lmao him saying that someone liking Pac is performative and then says he likes Jamiroquai and they came out in the same year

It’s performative if it’s rap but genuine if it’s alternative/artsy

nigga said “i watched people prop up music that genuinely promoted violence/drug use/misogyny in real life but were specifically appalled by the upside down cross”

and the response is “but you had controversial lyrics!!” nigga the point is that the lyrics weren’t the breaking point for certain people, the satan s*** was

he was doing a lot more than “upside down crosses” is probably why they bring up his lyrics. lol it’s a difference between violence/crime and talking about raping people

  • Jun 10, 2023

he's right. I consistently post the realest top 10 oat and people be glazing me cus it doesn't have some bums on there that are critically acclaimed or old and s***. who cares

exactly. rym charts, letterboxd, etc. create a cycle of everyone just having the same exact opinions on everything. "The Godfather has a 4.6 so i guess i gotta also love it too! and if i dont love it it's cuz i dont understand it and i should trick myself into liking it!"

Don’t know if he’s saying that’s the type of list tyler is talking about but outside of Danny brown and death grips and maybe mf doom all of those are well known albums that most people from casuals to enthusiasts would agree are among the top whatever lol. Like all of those could just genuinely be on peoples lists lol

Some are you being intentionally dense just to hate on him. He’s not saying kids can’t enjoy Wu-Tang albums, he’s saying people feel obligated to say the same 5 albums/rappers are their favorites because it’s the “right” opinion

Truthfully this is why I can’t stand hip hop tier lists done by yt people (fantano fans).

It always lists the same 5 or 6 albums from the 90s as their favorites just in different orders

Guarantee it’s gonna have DOOM, wu tang and Nas in it too

    Like imagining one guy listing:

    1. Nas
    2. Raekwon
    3. Outkast
    4. Biggie
    5. Wayne

    And another guy going:

    1. Raekwon
    2. Wayne
    3. Biggie
    4. Nas
    5. Outkast

And both of them clap for each other and pat each other on the back afterwards for having such good taste

i agree, but what he was saying was that from his perspective, he saw people say “that was too far” specifically for the religious stuff and not for his lyrics.

i’m not arguing that there isn’t a convo to be had about those lyrics being dangerous, im saying from his perspective he thought it was insane that people would let offensive or destructive lyrics across the board fly (from anyone) but get angry at the upside down cross

ofc he did get backlash for his lyrics and obviously caught bans for it. and when that happened in the moment, his argument was “y’all let eminem do it”, which you can feel whatever way about it, but he wasn’t ever saying “if y’all can be gangsta, i can be ted bundy”, the convos were always more nuanced that

personally, i was an OF stan and i consumed it on some “this is dark entertainment and none of us agree with it, just like we don’t agree with bad characters doing bad things in a movie” s***. but i also don’t think art is indefensible from criticism if it has clear potential to damage people in real life 🤷🏾‍♂️

Simultaneously if it wasn’t for RYM or letterboxd, most people wouldn’t expand their taste beyond the newest spider verse movie or Drake

Those people are infinitely less annoying than drake Stans and this site is living proof
