This book is so worth it for the character of Don Gately. 100 pages left and I’m rooting so hard for him as a recovering addict/member of AA
Finished like an hour ago
This might be my next doorstopper after i get thru 2066
Oh word. How is it?
Oh word. How is it?
First part cool but a damn slog. i heard it gets crazier after it tho.
I been reading shorter s*** in the meantime
I take notes on flash cards, in the margins and post it pages. Going to do a second pass and organize it by characters with color coordinated post it’s. Take my time. Spend my mornings reading for an hour or two. Don’t get discouraged by re-releasing sections. It’s how it was meant to be read.
I’m about 40 pages in and I absolutely love it. I don’t even know what I’m getting into here but each chapter and segment feels like it’s own entity entirely with unique characteristics and personalities.
I’m actually reading this on Apple Books and I really love the features of note taking and being able to instantly look up words and colour code.

DM me if you wanna talk spoilers don’t wanna put them here.
Man I finished it and after reading into it I'm pissed at how much I missed because of the non-linear structure. S*** tricks you into having to read it again lmao

Re-reading the first third of the book as we speak. I think I filled like 8 notecards this morning just on the first 15 pages s*** it clicking like Legos.

S*** man I don't think I have the time and energy for another re-read. I got Raekwon's autobiography waiting for me anyways

I’m still going strong . Will most likely just hit the first 3rd though. Won’t finish it. My 2022 list is so large. Trying to prep myself for Gravity’s Rainbow.
I’m about 125 pages in and the book is surprisingly easy to follow given its notorious reputation. There’s a lot of information and several characters but taking notes allows the reader to see quite quickly who is major and minor.
I’m curious on the structure, although I personally love it, I’m waiting to see how it sort of gels everything together, if it even does.
Oddly, there’s only been one section about Don Gately but I absolutely adored it & the passage about Kate Gompert was incredibly powerful and heavy.
This is my first novel in a minute & I really enjoy being thrusted into a world this rich and deep

You’re in for such a big treat.
I didn’t know I was the last one to post on here, restarted hoping to finish it this time, got a physical copy and about 130 pages in.
It’s on my to read list and I like to think I know a bit of English but with this book it feels like I only master 10% of the English language as a non native.
The translation of this is getting released in 2026 in Dutch. I’ll wait on that I think
Finished this a couple weeks ago and there hasn’t been a day where I haven’t thought about it and David. It’s a masterpiece. The final scene is forever etched in my memory.

I saw your post from 3 years ago and you mentioned that you took notes. Did you do the same thing when you finished your recent reading?

Yes most definitely - my book is filled with notes (definition of words I found interesting, favourite scenes, funny/clever/ though provoking lines/moments). It took me exactly 5 months to finish it.
Finishing up Brief Interviews With Hideous Men, starting on this in the next week

DFW’s essays are so goated
I finished it over the summer, but this book still lingers in my mind. What once seemed trivial— ETA’s empty halls, Gately’s mundane grocery runs, things you learn living in a halfway house—keeps resurfacing at random parts of my day. It’s an incredibly rich and poignant novel that stays with you.
I'd just play this and read for hours..
