Why as a muslim are you telling nonmuslims what they can and cant paint lmfao
the paintings were by muslim artists, at least that is my understanding

It’s not a perfect a***ogy but imagine a white artist depicting lynching. The situation with the teacher is more like showing a historical depiction by a black artist, but some random white guy drawing that would certainly be frowned upon
Lmao so the teacher can’t teach because they scared of radical Muslims?
It's an art class lol whether it's malicious or not doesn't matter. People have died for less

Bruh imagine comparing this to lynching depictions
I already replied to this, but I should add. It's not that I believe the lesson wasn't Islamophobic (bc I'm not Muslim and don't feel like I have the authority to make these decisions). But rather, I was confused/surprised on why it would be considered Islamophobic. Unfortunately, I didn't see much discussion specifically from Muslim perspectives aside from one professor who wrote an article (https://archive.ph/mKAPB)
Edit: the depiction of the prophet is included at the top of that link
yeah in review of the context i see why you did it because the offended party should have the loudest voice in all dialogue about the issue
i do think that itd be more accurate to say “fired for showing painting of prophet muhammad” bc even based on just the responses in this thread and the tweet you linked, it sounds like the islamic community is divided on whether “islamophobia” is an accurate descriptor for what occurred
Bruh imagine comparing this to lynching depictions
Like I said it’s not a perfect a***ogy but Muslims do NOT want to see that

makes me think of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Casket
though, depending on context, I actually think this would be great to discuss in a class. Not in a, is this good or bad art, but rather, how do we respond to content and intent within the context of art
Like I said it’s not a perfect a***ogy but Muslims do NOT want to see that
if only someone warned them ahead of time or allowed them to say that they didn't think it was appropriate
Like I said it’s not a perfect a***ogy but Muslims do NOT want to see that
Lol as someone that grew up with religious ass parents ik muslims dont want to see a lot of s***
That doesnt mean it should be prohibited in a country where there is separation of church and state
if only someone warned them ahead of time or allowed them to say that they didn't think it was appropriate

Who said anything about legality?
Erika López Prater, an adjunct professor at Hamline University, said she knew many Muslims have deeply held religious beliefs that prohibit depictions of the Prophet Muhammad. So last semester for a global art history class, she took many precautions before showing a 14th-century painting of Islam’s founder. In the syllabus, she warned that images of holy figures, including the Prophet Muhammad and the Buddha, would be shown in the course. She asked students to contact her with any concerns, and she said no one did. In class, she prepped students, telling them that in a few minutes, the painting would be displayed, in case anyone wanted to leave.
....
After Dr. López Prater showed the image, a senior in the class complained to the administration. Other Muslim students, not in the course, supported the student, saying the class was an attack on their religion. They demanded that officials take action.
feels like we're missing something here. by all accounts you shouldn't be showing depictions of the prophet point blank. but it seems like this professor went out of her way to warn and gather feedback from muslim students who didn't say anything until it actually happened.
Who said anything about legality?
She lost her job cause of it thats a loss of livelihood lmao

They chose to see it

Yeah and I’m not against what the teacher did whatsoever. I just don’t consider Muslims not wanting to see that as “forcing their beliefs” on others
my distaste for enlightened agnostics and fedora atheists grows more and more each post i read from these morons
why they feel the need to speak on religions and spirituality in general with no background nor knowledge will forever confound me
I grew up muslim dumbass

This painting was done by a Muslim lol

Bruh they had the option to speak up and they didnt

Did you read what I wrote? I said what the teacher did was the equivalent of showing a historical depiction by a black artist
yeah, everyone says this line too
Yea i wonder why theres a large swath of exmuslims that are against religious extremism
Bruh they had the option to speak up and they didnt
And? Like I said a few times at this point, I’m not against what the teacher did at all

do u think they shouldnt have been fired
