Hot take but movies like Superbad and s*** like that aren’t very funny. But they’re entertaining as s*** if that make sense.

    mosh

I think a better question is "is the R-Rated bro comedy genre dead?" and I'd probably say, yeah, mostly

Comedies still get released, they just end up on streaming now (as do most mid-budget films)

For example, most people itt are citing Judd Apatow-era films as the last great comedy films but he's still working. His next film drops on Netflix next month, but its not a "bro comedy" like Knocked Up or something:

Now are all of these streaming comedies good? That's a different question

Yikes this looks bad. Problem is majority of the cast are not comic actors.

Shiva Baby, Licorice Pizza, Red Rocket just from last year

Your definition of comedy is f***ed. None of these are pure comedy films like Anchorman or 21 Jump Street.

    Yes

Just implemented with other genres now as opposed to pure comedies, mcu movies are effectively comedies

    GotG hilarious tbh

We're entering/are in a Zeitgeist of "deep talk", "awareness", fake empathy and "common understanding". Pretty patronizing and horrific s***. No surprise comedy isn't doing so well anymore.

Think of how many people didn't get that PTA was making fun of racism in Licorice Pizza.

a lot of those mid 00s-early 10s comedies sucked anyway

they were just trendy at the time, which has now been replaced with superhero/franchise movies

Comedy is subjective (most of) the movies in op ain’t even that funny to me & have similar humor but mfs calling them classics, which I of course respect

  • Mar 16, 2022

Also idk these days everyone, even the “funny” people, wanna be taken seriously it feels like…so they’ll do an offbeat dark comedy or satire before some outright silly s***..which I’m not mad at

Yea it's been awhile since I watched superbad, but I don't recall busting out laughing at anything

It's more like stuff that'll put a smile on your face, but doesn't get a full laugh out of you. Which ain't a knock on it

  • Mar 16, 2022

I think the last movie i honestly cried laughing is Borat

That movie is a comedy masterpiece

OP is clearly talking about a certain type of comedy film and you're not rebutting what they’re referring to by just listing a bunch of dramas with comedic elements. The problem is they want aren’t promoted on the same level considering the mid budget theatrical film is dead generally. If you want this sort of thing you go on streaming and watch shows like The Righteous Gemstones. All of those Jody Hill and Danny McBride shows have kept the genre alive at least in that format.

memes/social media are a better format for humour which kinda replaced them imo

Movies way better for fleshing out bigger ideas, story telling, charecter study n stuff

I finally got around to that film and I was baffled by the controversy. It’s like people needed a big neon sign above his head saying “he’s wrong, laugh at him, not with him.” That being said I do think there’s an argument to be made that a “bad accent” can be funny on a surface level. Like I feel if his character was married to an Italian woman who only spoke Italian and he was talking to her like Mario it would be just as funny.
