Do you not understand the whole “at the current birth rate this may be a problem in the future” aspect of the argument

And also it’s already kind of a problem in certain countries because of high density rates, just not a worldwide problem

    you're completely missing the point

the reason why I used "you can fit every human in texas" earlier is to show that 7 billion is no where near the max amount of people that can live on a planet

    HENCE OVERPOPULATION ISN'T THE PROBLEM

which is the person in op's tweet whole point

    What reason?

tweet in op says it my guy

  • Sep 8, 2020

overpopulation is definitely a real thing and to write it off as a myth is pretty silly just because its not the sole reason that our planet is f***ed

It’s not about space it’s about consumption

You can fit 6 people into a one bedroom apartment but can you feed them all?

As I’ve said before, the human population can literally fit in one city
I didn’t even read when you said that, but overpopulation isn’t about fitting humans into the planet, it’s about how many resources a given human population can manage. And just like climate change, right now it can be managed but in the future if current trends continue it could be a big problem for the next generation

wouldn't the planet die at a faster rate if there were more humans?

the planet will never die, the things that inhabit it could tho

    no

Well capitalists would want more people people on the planet that way there’s a bigger market to sell products and make greater profits so that point is irrelevant

I’m not too educated on classism so idk how social classes factor into overpopulation so I won’t say much on it

And lastly ecological harm is a by product of people’s consumption needs. Take deforestation, people are cutting down the Amazon in order to create farmland, people are creating more farmland to feed more of the population.

Overpopulation and ecological harm are two branches of the same tree

The myth is that we'll somehow breed ourselves out of existence because of lack of resources when really the problem is how those resources are distributed

You calling the person op dumb when you don't even realize we could fit every human being in texas

    https://overpopulationisamyth.com/episode-1-overpopulation-the-making-of-a-myth/

That would be a cool movie tbh everyone living in texas

    @plants tell us

Yes and no. I don't remember the numbers exactly but it's something like the top 20% of people in terms of wealth contribute 80% of the pollution. (Kinda high p sure the numbers are wrong but u get the idea they ain't that far off)

If we made a structural changes to society from one that is built off gdp and year on year economic growth into one that is built off living simple more connected lives within our community then we could support billions yes, but so long as the rats race we're f***in doomed. The earth has finite resources, eventually you're gonna hit a limit to the growth and it's gonna "collapse" because that's just what happens.

that's the thing though, I'm pretty sure the person in op and others are against deforestation, farming, etc. Every person on earth could live a more eco friendly lifestyle and the so called threat of overpopulation would cease to exist

Me personally don't even identify as a communist or anything but I can clearly see that some of our current ecological habits are the real problem

No there's enough space for billions of more people. There's so much untouched land that can be used to house humans

Okay just read the tweet in op and tbh this is true but often I feel like people (especially leftists on twitter) use it as a tool to leverage their way out of feeling any sense of morals responsibility.

And I hate that s***. Spineless cockroaches tbfh

Yeah that’s the real solution, it’s unrealistic for our society to keep producing the way it is and expect us to not run out of resources

But like you said if everyone lives eco friendly we’d be able to handle a population boom and still have enough for everyone to eat

I get what the tweet is saying but I have 2 major problems with it.

    1. Just because we can increase the population doesn't mean that it's in any way advisable or beneficial. We should be at a number where the planet can support both us and our lifestyles.

  • Sep 8, 2020

    2. There are places that don't have the luxury of caring about the environment because of some version of poverty. Or they are experiencing industrialist booms like the US did for the last 2 centuries. What should they do as the population keeps increasing? Why should they be under scrutiny from the western world who is living much better lives.
