from my understanding, overpopulation isnt the problem, its more overconsumption. Like think about who uses more energy and resources: an upper class family of 3 from california, or a 7 person family in the slums of brazil.

    its clearly the california family.

I think our current lifestyle is part of the problem though

I agree. And there's plenty to do undoubtedly.

However having less people would be just as beneficial as lifestyle changing.

Even imagine the impact of doing both.

A lot of great points in this thread

Patting myself on the back for coming up with this discussion

  • soapmanwun

    you're completely missing the point

the reason why I used "you can fit every human in texas" earlier is to show that 7 billion is no where near the max amount of people that can live on a planet

    HENCE OVERPOPULATION ISN'T THE PROBLEM

which is the person in op's tweet whole point

Wtf is that supposed to prove tho, what a random ass statistic

Overpopulation is an issue because of its effect on the natural world. Humans are causing mass extinction right now. Obviously there’s plenty enough physical space for humans but that’s not the issue with overpopulation . These ignorant solipsistic ways of thinking will cause the demise of our planet in the near future. Better hope y’all grandkids are ready

The irony of them tweeting that s*** thru an iPhone prolly look I agree that if we all lived self sustaining and had our own crops and livestock then yes overpopulation is indeed a myth and many more could fit here. But we all live the way we do and take the conveniences in life so overpopulation is an issue. Were never going to switch up the way we live either, therefore we need to really hone in and a***yze our future with that fact. The way we ALL live will be the reason why wars will break out over fresh water in 30 yrs.

Yeah. There’s actually a f***load of unpopulated land in Canada and the US.

  • Sep 8, 2020

if overpopulation was actually going to occur it would be a problem ... i mean its definitionally a problem lol

its called a myth because developed populations stabalize and are even on track to reproduce below replacement rates

Canada is the the second largest country in the world, yet 90% of our country lives within 100 miles of the US. Most of the land here is completely unpopulated

it’s a problem of resource use, distribution, and waste more than anything else

The myth is that we'll somehow breed ourselves out of existence because of lack of resources when really the problem is how those resources are distributed

You calling the person op dumb when you don't even realize we could fit every human being in texas

    https://overpopulationisamyth.com/episode-1-overpopulation-the-making-of-a-myth/

Why’s the Texas thing literally what everyone that tries to defend overpopulation says. It’s not about fitting everyone in Texas. Even if you can fit everyone in Texas in a couple years Texas becomes unsustainable due to the number of people in Texas. Also sure you can fit everyone in Texas, but can you insure everyone gets enough nutritional food, water, access to hygiene etc.

Extend what I said to the world at large. Overpopulation is why we have issues like green house gases from the meat industry, why the amazon keeps getting culled etc. we have a demand for goods which is unsustainable for the earth

Her tweet is especially dumb, because it’s attempting to act like having too many kids isn’t an issue in our world Rn. What sucks is the lack of education (including s***edu) for developing countries, poorer people and families, where their having large families without being able to feed them (yes wealth distribution is bad in the world, but I’m sure you can’t expect that to change overnight)

    yes, overpopulation is a myth

    Ur trolling right

  • Sep 8, 2020

The only reason we technically 'could' support everyone now (with substantial efforts towards moving to green energy) is because the large majority of the world's population lives in what we would see as extreme poverty.

Once large numbers of people in developing nations start coming class to a developed-world working-class lifestyle, with all the resources that come with it, there will be a collapse, in all likelihood.

We've spent most of the finite natural resources of the world to build developed countries, and now we're going to have to tell the developing countries they can't do the same, because we used it all up already

  • Sep 9, 2020

it pretty much is. malthusian niggas in shambles.

localized overpopulation is a real thing, and can be fixed if we built more housing. NIMBYism and rent control prevent those things though.

Adding more people > more resources that need to be consumed > more demand, no?

We're f***ed regardless but adding more people to the equation will only make things worse. There was never supposed to be this many humans in the first place. Our population has grown from 1 billion to 7.7 billion over the span of 2 centuries, oil and fossil fuels f***ed everything up

  • allmygirlsdoyoga

Yeah. There’s actually a f***load of unpopulated land in Canada and the US.

what about lack of food, freshwater resources etc
population gonna be like 20 billion niggas gonna be like northpole f***load of unpopulated land

  • Sep 9, 2020

Overpopulation might be real but we are not at the point yet maybe not even close. How does the USA waste 80 billion pounds of food yearly but food is a problem? 🤔 Same goes for other big countries. We surely have enough resources but we are too wasteful
