the rich/white thing ain't too blatantly false

those schools def have a lot of rich students. they're generally diverse enough, still w/ lower representation of black students but those schools try pretty hard to achieve diversity for good reasons and for image reasons

but the wealth is pretty common there, except it isn't just the white ppl who are wealthy

and it's also probably true that some of the smartest kids aren't there and in their place are rich kids instead. however it's by no means a sham; most there will be smart or very smart

rich sure white not so much.

whites are underrepresented at ivy leagues

some "bad schools" get more funding and resources than some "good schools" part of it is cultural. You could be at that "good school" and still score the same.

variation btwn 2 4.0 students is on the school, so it could be massive and it could be tiny, but variation is absolutely there and it isn't accurate to categorize it as small

It is pretty small in my opinion

We can only measure this by looking at the “top” schools of other countries where standardized testing isn’t used

A 4.0 student has the ethic and base level intelligence to always adapt well to a “top” school

  • May 11, 2021

It's not oppressive by design, but yes.
Rather than getting rid of the test itself, efforts should be made to improve from the ground up so the oppressed groups do better.

"The variation of two 4.0 students isn’t massive"

i highly disagree two 4.0 from different highschool could mean way different things especially since grade inflation is so rampant. you can go to one school and get a 3.5 and be in the middle but at another a 4.0 and be a top student

I agree 30 and 33 on act is minimal

canada also has less people and more standardized highschool grading compred to usa.

    Well disagree to agree then

And yest you’re right canadian highschools are way more standardized and on AVERAGE better than US highschools, i say on average because US highschools like everything about America is extremely polarized. In the best school districts in America the kids there are among the “brightest” or rather best advantaged/equipped than all other students in the world.

I support standardization of American highschools as well as equalization and increase in funding

u can have a 3.5 at one school and be in the middle but go to another school thats easier and be a top student. the gap between 4.0s is huge. Dont know how u dont realize this.

do you really believe that if u are a 4.0 at one school that means u would be 4.0 at another?

some schools have a smarter on average student body so u would be competing against better students etc. I dont think SAT/ACT should be only thing used but they are a good way to tell which schools have heavy grade inflation etc.

I agree schools (non trade highschools) should be more standardized in terms of curriculum.

but more importantly if we were to move away from SAT/ACT
we would need standardized grading of assignments/school tests quizzes extra credit etc.

Last I checked US highschools arent graded on a curve so the average intelligence of yr fellow student doesn’t matter

Maybe some schools do this but not to my knowledge. To the extent inflation and deflation happens it’s usually based on the stringency of grading criteria

But again this can be addressed with more active standardization, which us public schools already are to an extent imo.

The main differences are always disproportionately on the socio economic terms. Teacher-student ratio, teacher salary, facility, funding, economic security of the student body etc

some schools grade easier and have easier assignments.

but yea standardization is needed if we want to get rid of SAT/ACT but schools may then still develop their own test.

would you be against doing nationwide finals? so everyone in precalc does the same precalc final etc.

    I mean sure why not

I think your overstating alot of this

There is only so much precalc material from textbooks that can be taught to a 16-17 yr old. It’s not THAT decentralized

I had to take the test in 8th grade to get in. I went to a pretty good middle school tho so a lot of kids in my class got into specialized high schools

people write tests at different levels. having standardized finals across courses would solve that.

in most of europe the final is most of the grade.

if we did that here that would even playing field in terms of gpa so standardized tests wouldnt be needed.

    No not really

The US higher ed system is f***ed and a pipeline for elitism and nepotism, the smartest kids aren’t attending ivy leagues, the richest and whitest are

We should stop funding these private schools, increase funding for flagship state unis and state colleges and then make tuition free

The top schools will still naturally arise based on gpa requirements and research and what not.

What we don’t need is what we currently have which is this unnecessaryily difficult system that advantages the rich and privileged

It’s much easier for rich people to fake GPAs than ACT scores since private schools can give you high grades but tests are standardized across country and are relatively hard to fake

If rich people want to attend top public schools by all means, it’s their right as tax payers and i welcome the class de stratification of higher ed.

What im calling for would de incentives the power ivies currently have

What I don’t want is the current status quo where they huddle in these handful of exclusive schools then are pipelined off to be leaders of industry and politics

I personally think we should have a standardized curriculum across the USA and have national tests in each subject, moving away from the ACT/SAT.

Realistically, this won't happen because individual states would throw a hissy fit about how they wish to teach things like the Civil War as "The War of Northern Aggression" (looking at you Texas)
