so if we dont use gpa and test scores now what?

Portfolio-based assessments, big data approaches through multiple data trackers and stealth assessments. We have the power to do so.

    Standardized testing is antiquated garbage.

You can't reduce the assessment of learning down to single-answer tests graded by a private firm.

You have to go at it multiple ways, and actually monitor data through multiple sources.

Justifying Asian people doing better because of culture is a racist talking point, just FYI. Also perpetuates the model minority myth.

Solid point about the money aspect though, that is 100% a big factor

I see what you're saying but culture absolutely plays a part. Ask any asian, indian or Nigerian how much they had to study and prepare because of their parents. Education focused cultures end up doing well. It's less the model minority s*** and more just kids of immigrants being forced to work harder.

What outcome do you think I want? Can you tell me?

    yes... a small part.

just because you are poor doesn't mean you cant study 🙄

"can't" -- ur right about that

but there are a lot of factors that play into one's inclination to study, their availability to (some kids in HS work, some don't; my guess is that poorer kids would be more likely to work), and things like having access to good resources. granted the internet can provide some great material for the act/sat nowadays

i dunno if the part is small necessarily. it's kinda like the 4.0 at 2 diff schools thing -- it's gonna vary widely depending on the person n their unique set of circumstances

in a way i think that also speaks to @sniper 's claim, bc there definitely aren't just 2 big factors (where 1 of which, "oppression", is vague) that'll ever determine any "culture"

The outcomes I would like out of an education system would preferably be that we can mitigate systemic issues which is the downfall of education in impoverished communities, which would lead to people being engaged in their education and they can see they have a way out of wherever they are, it won't be similar outcomes so to speak, but I would like everyone to excel to their greatest potential.

@Travis_scott_ My question is, what are you ideologically, because you're always spitting right-wing talking points but explicitly denying it, under the guise of "centrist" belief.

you can study during free periods study halls, on the bus, before after school etc. some people are just naturally gifted to.

most people dont even study for act/sat you just go to school and learn.

i said it was a small part its just not the end all be all

i'm genuinely impressed with how much you tried to simplify this

SAT/ACT prep is by and large more of a thing for schools with a wealthier student body

I try to talk to this fellow to have a enlightening convo but it always goes back to the same core points. The denial/downplay of underlying systemic issues and other factors in favor of "just work harder bro, meritocracy!!!", and "black people aren't oppressed, slavery ended years ago, just follow THE COPS"

it's the same neocon ben shapiro horseshit that's been hounded for years and doesn't work and are inherent logical fallacies once you dig into them.

I'm not saying just to throw money and see what sticks, you actually get these kids engaged through community programs and support. You cultivate a good environment and the people should respond well.

so them studying is unfair? Are tests and gpa in school unfair to?

is it unfair people are born taller stronger smarter as well?

The SAT/ACT prep only really helps for the non math sections. the math section is math most people learn in school.

what the f*** kinda point in this, this is entirely irrelevant

  • May 12, 2021

Do you also understand the majority of D.C. is affluent thus the student spending is high? @Travis_scott_

That point doesn't even work for your argument, property tax will still be s*** in poor neighborhoods, thus the schools will have bare-minimum resources

I agree on this. change the culture around schooling. even more important is to encourage trades
