is our culture really founded on anti-intellectualism? And how so? It’s definitely a part of it now but I thought it crept in somewhere, didn’t think it was as present in the founding, so I’m interested

Founded may not have been the right word

But it certainly devolved into anti-intellectualism in about the mid-70s

I think 9/11 jokes r gonna be aged out like this in 20 years time. Will be seen more as a nasty thing to joke about

people will care less and less if anything

What do you think is/are the causes of this cultural shift? Media, advertising? Poor diet?

What do you think is/are the causes of this cultural shift? Media, advertising? Poor diet?

The biggest shift would be the rightward movement the US made from LBJ onward both in terms of our foreign policy and domestic policy. LBJ laid the groundwork for the US's modern imperialist strategy and Nixon after him began the groundwork for the US's modern domestic strategy.

The stamp on this shift came when Reagan assumed office in 1981, where college tuition was ramped up to impossibly high levels in order to, in the words of Reagan himself, prevent the creation of an "educated proletariat". From there, we began rapidly replacing politicians, writers, activists, etc, as being cultural leaders, and replaced them with artists, entrepreneurs, and celebrities. It was celebrated from the 80s onward to be ignorant and uncouth because it made you seem "anti-establishment", the "establishment" being perceived as an "academic elite" that didn't actually exist but was a scapegoat for all the unanswered social chaos the US had been steeped in since the 60s. From the end of the Vietnam War onward, the American public was so traumatized and broken down that it was really easy for neoliberalism to take over and undermine the already paltry democratic fabric of liberal American society, starting first at attacking education and civic action.

Wasn't there some eastern European s*** post subreddit that reddit banned because of bigotry/xenophobia even though it was all people from that country making fun of themselves?

Just thought of that in relation to this thread

Edit region not country so it's different

  • Sep 13, 2023

Yeah I think regardless of what you think happened that day people still died and we should be respectful towards that

  • Sep 13, 2023

It depends on if you think humor inherently downplays the horror of atrocities, as opposed to highlighting the absurdity of their existence and ensuing influence.

Not all of it is intended to be disrespectful, there’s a lot of mindless trend hopping attitudes for certain, but that’s just the f***ing internet.

Also, for a ton of people, post-9/11 is just ordinary life. It’s all they’ve known.

  • Sep 13, 2023

No, but that's because we're funnier than them.

We are a country who’s culture is founded on violence, individualism, aggression, anti-intellectualism, apathy, and competition

This is a natural consequence of such a culture

Being an Atheist was edgy back then but it became mainstream.

now its being Traditional ( Religious ) is edgy

none of them would joke about 9/11 irl to strangers

White Americans joked about Kobe’s death right after it happened so they should stop being sensitive about 9/11

Kobe was a rapist who made his exorbitant living off of playing a children's game as an adult and died going on a helicopter ride that he paid for due to the pilot being high out of their mind while piloting it

The 2,996 people who died on 9/11 outside of the like 10 or so terrorist hijackers were predominately regular working-class people who had no histories of sexual abuse trying to either get back home, to their travel destinations, or to work, who got butchered in a kamikaze attack that downed two skyscrapers and a top government facility

Making fun of either is bad, but there's no equivalence between Kobe's death and 9/11 lmao

well I think it's the cultural shift in opinion of the events that succeeded 9/11. you know, the vitriol towards the middle east and middle eastern people was at an all time high in US. the war on terror became very controversial and costly. also you think of the innovation of technology and how connected the world became, as an american you could no longer feel like you were the center of the universe. there were 9/11 atrocities happening every day across the world.

In all honesty the concept of America being the center of the Universe worsened with the digital age. American nationalism is probably the worst it's ever been in the history of the country lmao, and certainly the most reactionary

What changed with 9/11 and the Internet was that the perception of America's strength and invulnerability was shattered for millions of people who were gullible enough to believe in both to begin with, which spurred the reaction of self-absorption and nationalism we've seen rise in the 21st century as a psychological defense American nationalists use to cope with the basic contradictions both in their logic and in historical reality and current events with regard to their perception of the United States

holocaust jokes exist but most people don't like them

most of those jokes don’t make fun of Jews though

The humor of the jokes is usually centered around how crazy it was for someone to actually bring up the Holocaust as part of a joke
