You been posting generalizations this whole thread like you some kind of A&R and most of it has been bullshit.

Paak recorded majority of Malibu vocals on a dented f***ed up Garage Band mic and got a Dr. Dre deal out of that at the age of 30.

Hella successful "low quality/badly mixed" rap artists that have a very loyal and paying fanbase on sites like bandcamp (e.g. mike, mach hommy, etc.)

Just because you talk in absolutes don't make it true bruh lol.

lmaoooo go read Anderson paaks life story

    google.com/amp/s/theundefeated.com/features/the-family-that-gave-us-grammy-awards-winner-anderson-paak/amp

nigga really flopped as breezy lovejoy and you talking like this

I'm assuming this whole "150k to blow" is actually just a marketing gimmick geared toward trust fund babies with no real experience. There's no way anyone is gullible to believe it costs that much good ideas literally cost nothing, you make them up in your head for free. After you have one you're set as long as you're dedicated.

nah they mean actually living as a musical artist

the other way just takes too much time and money realistically unless you're the exception.

and that's constant touring in hopes that one day you will blow up while you waste your motherfucking life hoping you get signed to live as an artist.

but i mean if you do it for the music that's cool tho

  • best poster

Reminds me of the Lupe and Chilly situation. they were definitely moving stuff to fund that career

its funny cause we laugh at that nigga lupe for being the nerd lupe

  • realslime1974

Just realized this is a white woman saying this. Of course it’s gonna take her 150k to break a hip hop artist. I wouldn’t even give her the aux without paying me a couple dollars

most niggas that make music are not street enough to control the streets.

It was to be a machine behind you to become a mainstream act

In the other hand you could reach a certain amount of fanbase - so you can become an indie artist, or some mysterious

Anyway sending demos is still a good way to get into some label, otherwise when you could pop in some blog or go viral in social media or youtube - so the labels might start a bidding war to get you

you really do have to know somebody though. no label head is gonna care about some random mp3 file in their email. they get those every day. something has to stand out to make them care about your music. like you said building a fanbase is something that makes an artist seem worth working with

Was telling my homies the other day, that there's a reason why the vast majority of your favorite rappers are real life trappers, that have hit B&E licks, gangbangers, etc.

because it takes an outstanding amount of money to actually be an artist and breakthrough in a material way.

What about someone like Lil Nas X who went from broke no name to superstar?

this is why I have an issue with ppl bashing labels so much. like yeah in certain instances there's bullshit involved & bad contracts, but how the f*** else is this nondescript rapper from the hood gonna get the money to pop off?

being an industry slave is almost the only way people will care

How about restructuring the rap game to

    a. Not require a nigga to walk around with life threatening amounts of jewelry on him

    b. Payola and buying spots on playlists and all that s*** dies and we just reward good music lol

Idk if Nas X the example for that because he was a meme page tho and I’m sure that was mobilized when initially pushing the record from absolutely nothing

The cost of a song and video is irrelevant. Guaranteed it had a ton of subtle marketing done, memes placed on popular social media pages to not look like an ad, etc. That costs.

That nigga blew up before meme marketing was really a thing

He was just a random street kid bro

You lookin to find smth thats not there bro

Its true there’s been machines and tons of money behind artists that blew plus a whole cemetery of musicians that never crossed your mind

But the internet age changed the game .. This aint true at all these days. Y’all doing too much working up conspiracy theories for every single artists

That change is gone. Social media algorithms cater to those already on and those who pay. It turned right back into the same business

I agree It’s not as chaotic and free as the 2015-2018 era

But there’s still a good amount of artists getting deals, getting shine that didn’t need an AMG Benz worth of money

countless artists broke out with just a mic and good branding. Like Travis... unless they’re talking mainstream mainstream.

So the next day, I called Travis Scott while I was driving to see my friend Jenn. He explained to me that he didn’t want a manager that would be having seizures, and he didn’t want to bring T.I. around anything like that. “How do I know you’re not just gonna be shaking on the ground and s***?”

billboard.com/articles/business/8054683/lil-pump-tha-lights-global-warner-bros-influencers No, you’re wrong… Dooney found him before he had any traction and they did the exact subtle marketing I said.
