She is 100% correct in her assessment. As previously mentioned all these things cost and artists are not only paying for quality they are also paying for association. Having the right producers, photographers, videographers, mixing/mastering engineers attached to their work is a prerequisite on the road to success at that level. Yes it's true there are exceptions to the rule but those are the exceptions they are few and far between. By the time we are hearing a song on the radio consistently, seeing a video on major platforms consistently, reading articles on major publications consistently, there are 10's of 1000's of dollars being spent to make that happen.

I also don't understand the ambiguity behind what level of success is being inferred here. Investing 150k into an artists career is obviously being looked at from the standpoint of mainstream success. While there are some artists in the underground with that level of cash investment into their career they are few and far between these artists also straddle the fence of the mainstream partially due to the fact of that investment.

Not saying it’s always $150k but dudes saying that it’s only the cost of the one song that blows you up which should be factored in aren’t seeing the whole picture. You (generally) don’t drop just one song and wait for it to blow— you gotta drop a lot of music and hope one of your tracks catches on, and you don’t really know which one it will be til it happens (even if you know a specific song is heat).

The real money spent is never on the music… It’s for the promotion and marketing

you have no idea the amount of money, connections, time, and resources available to someone like lil pump, or the things necessary to get him blown up. he was working in the underground for years, I'm sure he put far more than 200 dollars in

His first song was in 2015 and he got signed in 2016

He simply made sue of a new platform and marketing method before it got flooded to s***

    Is this true?

Is it true that it takes 150K to break a rap act?

I mean, it's all relative. To what degree are you trying to do this music s***?

Are you trying to compete with the big dogs with visuals/merch/touring/radio/playlisting/clubs etc.?

Or are you simply uploading your records via distrokid / tune core and hoping you get lucky and get hot?

You don't need a lot of money for the latter, the former can easily go past 150K and I'd argue that any popping act that you see today has poured in way more than 150K into their career even before breaking through and getting a buzz.

  • Sep 25, 2023

But yeah the vast majority of artists paid their way into the industry even the good ones

But a few have gotten through the door through raw talent and putting themselves out there relentlessly though, Eminem for example

  • Sep 25, 2023

I f*** w/ Wendy Day. She always got insightful stuff to say.

  • Sep 25, 2023

At the same time tho this kinda obvious she just going a little more in depth. Artists think signing a record deal is like signing up the league til they find themselves in debt to the label. You aren’t just an artist you also an investment

I used to be in a band and we made electronic music with some indie music. I used to struggle sing and the bassist rapped. We did a concert a few years back and got booed out of the building. Even though we were just a band that opened for other band, I saw a Facebook post slandering our band. Saying that we were extremely awful. Our manager quickly dropped us not long after. We managed to get traction in the first place because the bassist is very rich (well, their parents are anyway), and paid for promotion of our music on Spotify. We even landed on fresh new finds at one point. Thousands was spent on us but because our music still sucked we didn’t make it anywhere.

This is why labels are dying and can't break any new artists. We got old ass people like this running things with outdated ass methods to grow an artist

None of what she said is wrong lmao

The Internet didn't just magically make marketing free just because you don't technically need an agency to push your brand

I would share but don’t want to doxx myself.

But what I have learned is that the music industry is extremely corrupt, filled with narcissists and sociopaths. I was extremely depressed when I used to perform and record music. I’m much happier now since I left that s***.

DM it to me if you want but I ultimately respect if you wish to maintain privacy

And yeah the entertainment industry in general is disgusting lol, but that goes for really any industry. The egos above middle management anywhere millions of dollars are involved are unbearable

It’s not just me, but the other band members might not be too happy putting things out like that (we’re not even together anymore).

Even music reviews are now bullshit - can be easily paid for. New artists trying to get their music heard pay a lot of money in hopes of their music getting into blogs. That’s why modern music is so trash. You’ll never see another unknown band scouted like System of a Down or Nirvana. Just look at Fred Again.. for example… He knew Brian Eno before he even started making music. To me, new music is dead! Music died in the early 2010s!
