honestly i disagree i just don't think he was able to really connect to a black audience until he became older.
it's still evident gambino is the same person from his insecurities but times have changed(one of the main reasons) and he found a way to connect to an audience, redbone & atlanta was a crazy way to do it tho ngl.

honestly i disagree i just don't think he was able to really connect to a black audience until he became older.
it's still evident gambino is the same person from his insecurities but times have changed(one of the main reasons) and he found a way to connect to an audience, redbone & atlanta was a crazy way to do it tho ngl.
I think he found a way to dupe the public successfully using money. Tyler has done something similar to a lesser degree. There's not single piece of gambinos work that sounds like it comes from a real experience of his. Even his name coming from a generator tells you the absolute lack of personal input he has in his work and likely his life too. It's all commodified versions. Commodified social commentary, commodified artistry, commodified weirdness and ofc commodified black. He's not even present and is a walking caricature made for blogs to feel important

How much you listened to gambino cause I'm gonna be honest most of the stuff he released on royalty & camp (I do not talk I am just a rapper 1&2 to a lesser extent) come from his own voice / perspective.
Those are some of his lowest rated /niche projects tho.
That walking caricature part is just a part of the game tho tbh.
It's how you appeal more in order to sell more.

Tyler and Gambino both really did the same thing in 2016-17. It was a time where a lot was changing and they both pandered to it perfectly which extended their careers a lot

I love tyler and gambino but I also noticed the rebrand from “weird edgy outsider black guy” to whatever it is when tyler starts talking about being moisturized and s***. Lol idk how to put it into words
They perfectly tapped into how to market themselves and everything they touch to a certain flavor of black person/POC that popped up after 2016. I’m a hypocrite tho cuz I like a lot of their work in various mediums
