I disagree. I think most ppl who dont commit crimes are deterred by factors other than prison

You keep saying “most” people. Would you acknowledge that “some” people don’t commit crimes BECAUSE of prison?

Sending a rapist to a rehab center would require the same amount if not MUCH more capital than holding them in a prison cell....

There’s no profit in rehabilitating anyone. There is in keeping them there and keeping the govt subsidies coming

We’re talking about severe crimes, remember. Like murder. I’m saying that SOME of the people who decide NOT to kill, do so because of the fear of going to prison. I’m not saying ALL of them, not even MOST of them, but this group of people exist.

THIS specific group of people would be more likely to commit murder if prison no longer exists. Therefore severe crimes would also increase, not only petty crimes.

Remove the mechanisms from society that enables cops to kill black men in particular with impunity

You didn't answer the question. People like that will always exist no matter how hard you think you can create a perfect world.

What do we do with them?

Thread does not deserve to be this length. Prison reform sure. This is pure lunacy tho

Yeah I already said that line of thinking applies to ppl not deprived of a solid living standard. Also didnt care to discuss it further cuz prison abolition goes with overall changing society

We’re going in circles. Yeah your idea can make sense with an overall change in society. But then you also said that it can be applied right now, and that the only consequence will be an increase in petty crimes... I’m telling you severe crimes would also increase, but now it seems like you’re saying that only people that don’t have to worry about material conditions would be the ones that would increase these severe crimes? Whatever you mean by that there WOULD be an increase in severe crimes if your idea was applied under today’s conditions.

Just admit this can’t be applied today.

No that's not what im saying. I'm saying I dont see why severe crime would go up because the idea of going to prison isn't what prevents crime.

A person like me for example might say I won't commit murder cuz of prison but also I can say that because I also have no reason to commit murder.

You seriously believe that NOBODY, ABSOLUTELY NOBODY in the ENTIRE world has ever thought of committing murder (somebody that HAS reasons to do it, whether this is because they hate that person or whatever other reason) and then deciding NOT to do it SOLELY BECAUSE he couldn’t find a way to do it WITHOUT getting caught and going to prison?

You think not a single person like that exists?

I don't think our understanding of mental health has come to the point that rehabilitation centers would be able to effectively rehabilitate criminals. I think rehabilitation should be integrated into punishment as much as possible though.
