Lol. Most of this is just basic Jazz & regular Electronic aside from the last one. Nothing super crazy about it & does not belong in the same convo with james or the rest of the people in your list imo

If we r getting technical it's not jazz at all it's most similar to funk/electronic fusion. But he also does chillwave and he's dabbled in trap. I mentioned Toro because he is very capable of creating densely layered soundscapes that are cohesive and synergistic. His musical acuity is extremely high and he very rarely misses. Tbh if by texture we are talking about granular distorted sounds or just making an evolving tapestry out of instruments Toro is very skilled at both. You can't even sequester him into a genre dudes just a musical genius.
Two dudes ktt love that I just can't understand why. James Blake and Frank ocean. That minimalist s*** is not for me it's very boring imo.

It's basic with nothing special while you're other examples are "outside the box" & very distinct to me. Only Toro stans try to fit him into something higher than he is imo & I don't understand it. Basic sounds & mediocre vocal, & instead of listening to someone that dabbles in them I can just listen to someone that is fully in the genre that does it better.
James Blake isn't super minimal outside of his first album neither is Frank outside of Blonde/Endless lol.
And I discovered James & Frank before i even knew KTT existed back in 2011/2010.
I respect it if you enjoy it, but he isn't some kind of genius or master to me. He's what i would call not exciting for myself.

fair enough. i wont pretend to understand your perspective, i mean i like channel orange but most of what toro does is way more advanced than the production on that album and ive always thought frank is a decent but not great vocalist (in contrast to the weeknd who is an amazing vocalist despite his production).
Its one thing to make a cool sound and build a song around that. its another thing to make a song into an adventure, which i think toro consistently does very well. Samantha, his trap work, is not really trap but he uses the core elements of trap to create something that i have yet to hear replicated.

Ill admit i might be wrong in saying toro uses revolutionary sounds but to me and as its been defined itt texture is about how you mix together all of your sounds to create one cohesive picture, not just about trying to find the strangest yet most intriguing and beautiful sounds like arca, who is also amazing but id listen to toro over arca 90% of the time.
Sorry for the double post but this is a really good thread because all of the artists we're discussing are unique and talented in different ways. The idea of texture or even visualizing sounds is really potent and at the heart of what makes music so enjoyable. I like the variety of perspectives here and i think threads like this challenge us as fans to understand the music better. Maybe ill dig more into james blake to see if i can understand the hype
also im kinda drunk and confused why im writing so well rn usually i cant write for s***

Well I wouldn't put Frank into this category (although I do really enjoy his music), I do agree with that. Most of his tracks are usually just one note, only some things are really layered or evolve like Pyramids, Pink Matter, one of my favs Pretty Sweet, but what you described is what I would say about most of James' music.
James Blake, Nicolas Jaar, Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Swans & Arca come to my mind regarding this topic, along with some older people like Scott Walker, the Lift Your Skinny Fists guys or Boards of Canada.
I'll listen to these n tell u what I think then hit u back with some James' songs i feel fit this topic.
Even if we don't switch sides, we can still at least find some enjoyable music or perspective

Okay that first song by Toro is super dope. Does he have a project or more songs in that vein? I like that one a lot & it's more interesting imo. The way he manipulates his vocals to be kinda like another instrument with the beat & the beat is super hard too. Would love more stuff like that.
Here's a bit of all sides of james', I know it's a handful lmao but I couldn't fullt decide between them so decided to do a few for each category
I hope u find something u like from it tho
More "eccletic" James:

More "regular" James:

Then a lot of his newest album & parts of his EPs & parts of his last album have some more "mainstream" sounds too:

Been listening to his self-titled and Assume Form albums and I dare to say he may be one of the greatest producers of the 21st century.
Wilheim Scream may be his greatest song ever.
I still think The Colour in Anything is his magnum opus. Never had I ever cried during a listening session until I listened to this beautifully melancholic album.
Any thoughts on this, KTT2?
Put my above vids in op imo
My favorite aritist of the 2010s & one of my favs period of all time.

Ambient Rainbow and The Usual off this tape
i’ll never understand what y’all like so much about Toro. his first few albums are nice, but after that it’s like he lost direction and hasn’t released anything interesting since imo. and What For? is offensively bad lol. Samantha was ok tho.

Just aint for you i guess but Boo Boo is very interesting imo

yeah Boo Boo was a surprise because that album was fun at least. idk i don’t really like how he’s tried to include all these funk elements into his music lol it feels very forced and thin.
Man I wish niggas really wanted to have serious production/lyricism convos on here
“Texture” is your greatest asset as a producer in terms of standing out lol
wut
Yeah your texture so to speak is basically the timbre of your entire soundscape
Aka how everything comes together to a single identity, and how each seperate thing means its own part of your sound
Travis Scott's autotune means one thing, his beats' chords mean another, his drums mean another thing and so on...but when it all comes together it becomes Travis's texture.
Aspiring producers especially need to get the importance of a distinct "texture"
the word texture relates to your definition in not a single way
Tbh I wish I knew how to make great textures, sometimes I manage to make s*** sound good on accident but most of the time my sounds are just empty and basic
But imagine talking to someone and saying "Listen to the vibe and texture of this James Blake song"
