So if Ed Sheeran released a pure hip-hop album and was crowned Billboard’s #1 Hip-Hop artist of the year, you wouldn’t see that as a slap in the face to actual hip-hop artists that dropped during the year?
Edit: oh and then Ed drops a full on business as well usual pop album to top it off
i'm glad you used this example, it's a good one. and my answer personally is no, I wouldn't see it as a slap in the face for Billboard to crown Ed the #1 hip hop artist of the year if he were to drop a dope hip-hop album and outperform everyone else. it's statistics not opinions, if i'm correct.
a publication outside of Billboard likely wouldn't do that. this is Billboard's game.
