How on Earth was Love Galore not a breakthrough hit

I was about to say that’s definitely her breakout hit 100%

It’s not. It’s a hit, but not her mainstream breakthrough. It didn’t even chart until three months after it released

Let them run with their narratives. CTRL didn't have any chart-topping hits but still ended up being one of the bestselling female albums of the last 10 years.

They weren't there I guess. 2017 was her year.

Love Galore was top 40, went multi-platinum within a year, and it made the 2017 Year-End chart. It was one of the top 100 most successful songs of the year, that’s a notable hit.

If Love Galore doesn’t count then that’s like saying Swimming Pools / B**** Don’t Kill My Vibe (similar sized top 40 hits on release) werent breakthrough hits for Kendrick. They were all one of their genre’s biggest hits at the time of release.

Not everything gotta be a #1 record or Diamond to be a mainstream hit

We were there. You’re over-exaggerating her commercial performance that year. She had a good year for a debut project, but to say that 2017 belonged to her is gassing it.

CTRL finished as the #26th highest selling album of the year, and it didn’t even reach 750K units in 6 months.

The album was still successful and was the launching pad for her career, but All the Stars was her first true breakthrough into the mainstream

Ok, just because it sold faster doesn’t make it her first hit.

So if Love Galore/The Weekend weren’t breakthrough hits what the hell was Kendrick’s first breakthrough hit to you? Bad Blood Remix?

  • TheFader

It was a pretty big song for her but The Weekend had a lot more play around me at least when I was around when CTRL first dropped

You have to factor in that Travis Scott is a KTTcore act so that song might be the one that exposed a lot of this site’s base to her

I never said it was her first hit. Please learn how to read.

Too many of y’all insert yourselves into conversations that you completely created in your own head.

Nobody said All the Stars was SZA’s first hit.

It’s the same way how Birds in the Trap was a successful album but ASTROWORLD was Travis Scott’s first true breakthrough into the mainstream.

Saying All the Stars was SZA’s first breakthrough is not invalidating CTRL’s success, it’s just different levels

And any metric you’re using it still wasn’t a “first”.

That other user already pointed out What Lovers Do, which peaked just as high and was even bigger on radio than All The Stars.

Your only defense is an arbitrary sales milestone. And if anything actual “breakthrough” hits obviously sell slower since that’s when the breakthrough/discovery is happening. Stuff that sells higher afterwards is post-breakthrough.

CTRL is her breakthrough album (low first week sales but huge longevity), while SOS is her post-breakthrough album (immediate high sales and huge hype).

By every conceivable metric All the Stars was and still currently is more successful than What Lovers Do. One went 2x Platinum in 7 months, the other in 4 months. Hope this helps!

Yes, it is more successful. That doesn’t make it her first breakthrough hit.

Using your logic Kendrick breakthrough hit wasn’t until HUMBLE since that’s the first time he didn’t take hella months to sell millions lmao

I never said it was her first breakthrough hit. I said it was her first HUGE mainstream breakthrough record. Huge is a subjective word. Hope this helps!

Anecdotal but my five year old niece was singing the hook to Antidote every day in 2016

Yes, it was a popular song.

Something later being the breakthrough doesn’t imply that everything that came before it wasn’t successful

And why would What Lovers Do not be considered a huge hit?

You haven’t answered why, you just keep repeating All the Stars sold more which doesn’t mean What Lovers Do can’t also be huge

It was a moderate hit. It peaked high but didn’t last long and had zero longevity whatsoever

Also SZA and Kendrick have both benefited from having longevity of their music.

Swimming Pools was a much bigger song when it came out and probably Kendrick's breakthrough song but looking back, Money Trees is a bigger song by far over time.

Looking back we can't call Money Trees a "breakout" hit.
