The production on The Cool was dope imo, besides that s***ty Go Baby song

Yea I’m pretty sure we talked about it on KTT1 lol

Feel like some of the beats sound average/generic. Nothing outright trash but nothing mind blowing either

That’s just my personal opinion. Lupe raps at such a high level and I always felt like he deserved production to match it

Yea I just put a little edit in that post but might as well add here. Kendrick is definitely in my top 5 all time, and I’d most definitely take GKMC over any Lupe album and probably DAMN too. TPAB is a classic no doubt, but just not necessarily my preferred taste when splitting hairs on classics.

nice to see someone rate damn. highly in regards to kendricks discog. i’d still rate tpab as his best but damn. a closer second than some ppl think imo

Yeah Section80 would be a way better comparison since both have more traditional rapping styles
But I still would take Section80 over The Cool and The Cool is my favorite Lupe album and I own the CD

I feel like most of the time people feel that way is from the mixing style, not really the beat. Tbh GKMC had some weird/generic beats and people think the production was dope because of how fantastic the mixing was

Maybe unpopular opinion but I don't think the production on GKMC aged that well, honestly TPAB is much better in that regard. I'm talking about beats like Swimming Pool, BDKMV, Backseat Freestyle where I just don't feel too keen on. Could just be me though because it doesn't hit as hard like it did before, just my opinion

I’m not big on the argument of aging well because it’s so subjective. Illmatic, etc none of those albums would be considered aged well.

But I think the production on GKMC is absolutely flawless. Every songs sonically fits.

    But I respect your opinion.

TPAB is better overall, but Kendick isn't capable of putting together a concept album as well as Lupe from a story standpoint.

The Cool storyline is the most well done storyline in the history of Hip-Hop

  • Apr 30, 2020

The Cool has higher highs, TPAB is a better album.

GKMC had some hard production imo. Sonically it’s very cohesive. Only beat that didn’t standout too much to me was Good Kid

Some beats on The Cool were borderline trash imo and I love that album lol

Like the Gotta Eat beat is pretty wack to me. Dumb It Down beat sounded kinda cheap. Hip Hop Saved My Life instrumental was always lowkey weak to me

Again, I love The Cool so don’t kill me lmao I’ve felt this way since a kid

    Hip Hop Saved My Life
    Intruder Alert
    Streets On Fire

One of the top 3 track runs of oat

Lupe's albums in general don't really have the "hard-hitting" production, since that's not really his style kinda like J. Cole. I respect your opinion on The Cool, tbh some of the production is a little left-field for your average listener and it's bound to cause some split opinions.

  • Apr 30, 2020

Now this is a great thread

  • Apr 30, 2020

I love both but the cool is part of my childhood so it edges out from a personal standpoint.

  • Apr 30, 2020

    Nah fasho

The style of the beats didn’t bother me though it was the execution

Lupe was def ahead of his time and was a big influence behind all the blog era rappers using electronic/rock type production. I just think the album could’ve been executed in a better way if he had top tier producers involved
