He (or she) probably worked at a corporation where their hard work wasn’t recognized, and that’s what makes them say that. I, too, felt this way when I was working for a company that never acknowledged hard work or gave raises

    It can really fw you

I myself don’t work at a corporation but I have many friends, coworkers, and family that do and they left the corporate life because they realized that they were not valued, only their output. They were only seen as tools to create that value and not an actual participant in the foundation of their workplaces

    Worse take?

"That's why I charge the prices that I charge" vs "Get back to work!"

    Semantics

It isn’t semantical and it isn’t defeatist. It is the reality of how our world is structured. Why would a company kill their profit margin giving workers raises when their productivity is rising as well?

Defeatism would be thinking this system still works or saying that we can’t do anything about it. The reality is that we can, and historically have, changed the system to value contributors more than owners.

Yup, 10000% agree with your friends. Good for them for getting out. I, too, share the same sentiment

I get it, but to turn that into a personally "factual" world view of "working hard gets you nowhere" is completely ridiculous

If I want to go to the grocery store, I have to walk there, bike there, drive there, skate there something. Even if I order it through an app there are still actions I must do in order to get my groceries. Some kind of effort must take place on my part to get me from point A to B. Communists really want everything handed to them

Just say you don't work hard

i work two jobs and volunteer at a soup kitchen working hard does make more value but when you're not the owner of the value your labor creates then yes, you won't see a dime from it

this is exaclty how big companies have millionaire CEO's. since they technically own all of the value you create, your hard work does nothing to advance your own wealth since its creating value for the person you're working for

That's cool but the blanket statement of "Working hard gets you nowhere" is incorrect and defeatist.

Personally, if I want something I go get it
