Ran is my favourite
When Kurosawa moved into colour he did not come to play
In case anyone ITT didn't know, the man would PAINT his own storyboards
Top 3 fav. I havent seen a movie of his that wasnt incredible
Red beard
Rashomon
High and low
Seven samurai
Throne of blood. I can go on
Oh this one has been on my watchlist for awhile now I f*** with Miike too, even tho i've only seen two of his films so far
It's a perfect film and it's his most popular one for a reason
The final sequence is basically a 40 minutes non stop action scene full of great setpieces, you'll love it especially if you already fw Miike
It takes a moment to really get going though and in the first 15 mins i thought i wasn't gonna like it but MAN it just gets better with every passing minute
Also has a LOT of typical Takashi Miike humor which i did not expect, and it somehow totally works in combination with being this super serious story
Can't praise this film enough bro!
edit: which 2 of his films have you seen again?
I need to get on this
Contender for best use of colour in a film , you will love it

watch sanshiro sugata to ruin that ’incredible’ track record (still a good film tho)
I heard Mifune and Kurusawa fell out because during filming of Red Beard, Mifune was offered a role where he would have to shave his beard, and Kurosawa refused to let him use a fake beard, so Mifune had to turn the other role down

Yes and this was even worse because the filming of Red Beard took like 2 years, Mifune and Kurosawa kept getting sick at different times which delayed it quite a bit, and it wasn't just one role, Mifune couldn't get any role with that beard I thought.

damn so it wasnt just one specific role
i see why he was mad tbh
Im watching his films for the first time and I’m doing it in chronological order, just finished the 7th one
One beautiful Sunday and drunken angel>>>>>>>

I've seen Audition (which i love) and Ichi the killer which im somewhat uncertain about
Kurosawa doesn't get enough credit. He's a director who established his own pacing, beauty and venerated his culture above all.
An amazing director who should be discussed amongst the modern Scorsese, Tarantino etc. Star Wars & Wes Anderson should run synonymous with Akira Kurosawa.

I actually dont really like Audition as a big Miike fan. I’ve seen about 15 of his films and i almost like every other one more than Audition
boring and overrated
How many of his have you seen? His filmography is so diverse that there's probably something you'd enjoy in it
Only seen Rashomon, Ikiru, and Kagemusha.
Enjoyed Miyagawa's work behind the camera on Rashomon. Think it's a quality IMBD 250 type movie. Really broadly appealing concept with deeper implications for serious viewers. I found Ikiru pretty melodramatic and flat. I didn't like the lead actor at all. His stares into the void and pregnant pauses were torture. Then the last 30 minutes turns into a really heavy handed Rocky montage about duty and meaning. Bleh. Kagemusha had some lovely battlefield shots of the calvary and their flags. Really fluid wide shots. Enjoyed that.
I still need to see Seven Samurai, Ran, and Yojimbo at least. I'm more of a Kiyoshi Kurosawa kind of guy though.

interesting, but from what i've heard Audition is very different than his other films, so it makes sense that you would prefer his other movies, as they are more Miike like

Yeah its just that all his films are super entertaining and stylized, i didn’t mind the slow burn of Audition (Gozu is a lot slower and i love that one) but i was just pretty bored throughout. Also the film has had a reputation in the west for years, so the sudden switch to torture scenes didn’t hit like they should have for me either
But bro you fr need to get into his stuff asap
13 Assassins is his best overall, but First Love is shorter in runtime and his most accessible. I always point people to that film when they want to get into Miike

First Love is on my watchlist as well, might even have it laying around on my computer. Really wanna dig deeper into his filmography now, you got me all hyped up lmao
