The point of this club is to host a film weekly to discuss and recommend. Films we are watching are from the Criterion Collection (we're the offshoot of the Criterion Collection Thread)
At the turn of the twentieth century, three Australian army lieutenants are court-martialed for alleged war crimes committed while fighting in South Africa. With no time to prepare, an Australian major, appointed as defense attorney, must prove that they were just following orders and are being made into political pawns by the British imperial command. Director Bruce Beresford garnered international acclaim for this riveting drama set during a dark period in his country’s colonial history, and featuring passionate performances by Edward Woodward, Bryan Brown, and Jack Thompson; rugged cinematography by Donald McAlpine; and an Oscar-nominated script, based on true events.

Haven’t seen a Leigh film yet so I’m looking forward to seeing this one 😮
me too
First Mike Leigh film. It’s just a simple drama about a working class family including twin sisters with the opposite personalities. Nicola seems too edgy that she believes herself a feminist It’s just that solid but I liked it.
Watched last night on disk and it was also my first Mike Leigh film. This was a nice slice of life film about a middle class UK family and their friends. The acting was great even though I struggled with understanding the accents a bit. I totally fell in love with the wife and her laugh. Nicola was straight up giving me so much anxiety whenever she was on screen cuz it was just coming off her skin the whole film.
My favorite aspect of it was definitely seeing all the Harry Potter alum in their early days since I watch those damn HP movies way too often lol
Peter Pettigrew made a goddamn fool of himself in this one
I also checked out his five minute short films that were on the disk and it was cool to see how much he could convey with discrete things here and there to add layers to the limited amount of time you have with the characters. They were all worth checking out.
Damn wtf in. This one of my fav mike leigh movies too gonna rewatch before i discuss
I’m in. Need to start getting through all these criterion movies
