Ayyyy been meaning to rewatch this one. I wasn’t crazy about it at first because (to my stupidity) I had always believed this was a comedy similar to His Girl Friday.

But after becoming more accustomed to Hawks since watching it I’ve been want to revisit it.

just rewatched recently and its a goddamn masterpiece. hawks had the most deft touch with every aspect... the banter comradery tension and Cary's swagger and authority could watch it every week

hmm, might have to rewatch soon. Remember it being good, but didn't knock me off my feat. Also forgot that it released in 1939 though

    woah

hes obviously good in it. But I dont think its better than pretty much any Cary Grant role of that sort. not like he decided to go "there" for this one

Perhaps true. I think he did turn down on some of the goofy Grant-charm and played it a bit straighter like other leading men of the time would have. Not sure that makes it inherently a better performance. Actually could say the opposite.

Well he was coming out with like 4 of those per year around then so it's interesting to see him play it stern

oh definitely interesting, but also makes it more interchangeable. I can see other actors playing this role easily. But most would fail when Cary interjects comedy and screwball in his characters

Yeah Bogart would've been right at home in that role, can't think of many others at that point that would've killed it like Cary did tho. Jimmy was still too affable. Fonda too aw shucks.

Bogart is the obvious one. Especially with the Hawks connection and Casablanca as reference. You're right about Fonda and Stewart, but like with Grant typecasting might just cloud the memory. The uniform, plus the setting and some grimy make-up and you're halfway there. Stewart channelling whatever he did in Flight of the Phoenix and Fonda OuaTiTW. O r Graphes of Wrath but less sad and like you said more authorative.
