just finished Life Is Sweet, first Leigh film

Gotta be honest, thought it was meandering a bit, didn't know where it was gonna end up, but that final 10 minutes was absolute heat

S*** had me mad depressed tho, reminding me of some s*** way to close to home

Gonna hopefully check out Life is Sweet tomorrow and write about

@KyeezusPt2 got an idea for this week's film?

One that I’ve heard things about a lot that I actually haven’t seen yet that I think would be a good selection is The Executioner (1963) dir by Luis García Berlanga

No idea this was a thing, nice

wasn’t feeling this at all, story didn’t grip me at all

  • Mar 23, 2020

It's a pretty solid film but it's kind of not feeling it all. I like satires and I can see where it points at Franco's regime and getting around censors.

The handing of the plot was okay. I think it could’ve been fleshed out better and a little more clear. But I did appreciate the dark humor and the contrast between the attitudes towards death between (what I’m assuming) the older people more comfortable with Francoist and younger people like the protagonist.

That shot where he is going to go forth with the executioner and his hat falls was a masterful shot.

Only Angels Have Wings is a great film, but it's kind of crazy how it was snubbed at the Oscars. With its great special effects with director's pride for aviation (even worked with Howard Hughes) and very heroic tale of courage and defiance. Even in an environment where you have high mountains (takes place in a fictional South American country in the Andes), cliffs, gorges, etc where characters defy death.
