I’ve heard of save the cat didn’t know it had its own website. Thank you!
Yessir. But there’s different methods to doing beats
You have save the cat
You have the heroes journey
You have the story circle
It’s more so figuring out which one you understand the Best but they all pretty much mean the same ish
Guys like Rian Johnson said he literally copies the beats from other movies but just puts his own ideas/scenes
Example: “Beat 10 something good happens.” So he’ll put a positive scene for the protagonist. And then “Beat 16 something bad happens”
Story telling has a structure to it usually that plays on peoples emotions that’s why formulas like beat sheets can be created

They’re good to keep you on track when you finally get to writing the script too which is why I don’t want to skip over this step. Just have to find a format I can get comfortable with
in, gonna try to do a script for nanowrimo. dunno if its gonna be a movie or a series of shorts

Here are a few
EDIT: I don’t like that last one I posted all too much. I’ll edit with more articles on story beats tomorrow as I continue reading about it
I’ve found this article I really like breaking down beats step by step while also providing a free template to use. It uses the Matrix as an example of beats in a story
how do you guys write props and actions in scene desc. In bold, underscored, capital letters?

I haven’t figured out my personal style yet but I think I prefer CAPITAL LETTERS
Started a save the cat beat sheet today about a dream I had last night. I hope to get it done by the end of the day so that I can start penning the script
have gotten through a first draft but am stubbornly putting off finishing up the touching up process
We should share our process too
What I like to do is take either the premise, or a component, of a book I like and then write my own rendition of it, using it as a means to experiment and try different things.
One of my biggest problems when it comes to writing while using my own central ideas is feeling like I’m constantly wasting their potential, so I utilize these other scripts that I have no intention of doing anything with to get practice in, and possibly even come up with things that can be fitted into my own personal work (scenes, lines of dialogue, particular characters I’ve come up with etc.).
I also tend to work my best under pressure, with some kind of deadline in mind. I used to intentionally procrastinate when it came to papers and things in school because I’d always cinch it when I was forced to do it at the last minute with no room to hesitate.
Anyone want to read a short I wrote for a small contest? Finishing up the post production on it now
Being a big premise guy, the way I look at it now is: take a work that inspires me at the time and pair it with an unlikely genre. Aka initial conceit
The Terminator is a sci-fi version of Halloween. The Dark Knight is a superhero version of Heat
After that comes the premise itself. When you’re working off of an initial conceit, the basic premise works itself out as the premise is a combination of the two ideas that make up the initial conceit. Halloween + sci-fi genre = a young woman is being hunted by a time traveling killer cyborg, and a man from the future comes to the past to protect her. It’s clear how this idea is inspired by the premise of Laurie Strode being stalked by a masked serial killer, and a detective is after this killer
Coursea has a free 20 week course that teaches screenwriting a feature film. All online from a Michigan State University professor. If some KTT guys want to enroll we’d be able to make peer groups and advise on each other’s scripts. By the end of the class we’ll all have a complete script
I have this really weird idea for a mini series or a movie and I can’t decide if it’s f***ing stupid or cool

Write it either way. Worst case you got it out of your head and on paper.
