i think it is inherent that you have to provide people incentives to do productive thing A when they would rather do unproductive thing B

and that incentive shouldn't be profit is my point

This is not a controversial statement I would imagine but I'll also direct you to read this thread

    https://twitter.com/anarchotrash/status/1278337171758473216

Landlords and housing developments are the reason housing is so unaffordable.

People buy up limited resources that are necessary for survival and mark them up with ridiculous margins. I ain't a socialist, I think people should be able to own land, but this is really clearly unsustainable.

Like it doesn't actually cost $2000 a month to live in a town house, it costs less than $500, the rest of the money is going towards rich peoples bank accounts.

so is it direct fulfilment of "purpose" then?

why do i slog my guts out for 40 hours a week building your houses, what do you have to offer me.

do we allocate everyone into a job that gives them goal attainment and personal satisfaction to make sure they actually do it? what if power is my reason to live?

motivating people who are PAID to work is hard enough. how do you motivate people who aren't?

only if that profit is distributed in a certain way. but you can still have a prosperous nation when the labor isn't based on a profit motive.

I mean we have programs in schools to provide free lunches. food stamps and wic for families, and ofc public housing. Now all of these programs are not great but they are meant to be that way. Anyone can survive off basic gov assistance. But people wanna strive on gov assistance and that's never gonna happen.

I somewhat agree but fear that you’d just be substituting one form of evil ‘landlord’ with another (I.e Evil government)

One problem is that people assume there are only two options: the government or the free market

correct, i dont think it is wrong to suggest real estate should be a regulated industry (that is to say 'properly' regulated) specifically when being treated as an investment (e.g. here in Australia negative gearing and foreign ownership are two interconnected issues that are causing issues)

I think this issue will blow up around the world in the medium-long term especially as housing prices are artificially inflated with record levels of debt and interest rates nearing zero

No, I don't mean somewhere between the two. I mean controlled by the people rather than the government or the free market.

I would have thought 'controlled by the people' is synonymous with 'the free market' unless I'm missing something?

'The free market' is largely governed by your country's central bank and the decisions they make which effect the attractiveness of real estate as an investment

actually a large portion of it is going to property taxes because the local governments continue to raise taxes, especially in up and coming areas

The free market would not be controlled by the people, but rather by a few elites. Control by the people implies democracy and people coming to a consensus over decisions and making decisions to benefit everyone, rather than being pressured to do things based on profit

What real estate market is controlled "by the elites"?

Are you suggesting that these "elites" have direct, consistent and overwhelming power over monetary policy? Because this is what determines how attractive real estate is as an investment. Please clarify
