the richest 400 people in america own $3T in wealth. we could tax them to house every homeless veteran in America and they would still be billionaires many times over.

An inheritance tax before any of that would be a pretty big help.

(There is currently no federal tax on inheritance)

Yea but someone has to buy them, if there are no landlords on the market how does it work selling the complex ownership to multiple people? You're basically selling the rooms individually?

I'm not sure how it works in the states, but typically here in Australia a developer will build the apartment complex and sell the apartments individually, but landlords are incentivised through negative gearing to buy more and attain more wealth by leasing it out

Its not, they're attaining wealth at the expense of the poorer working class who are effectively paying off the landlords mortgage to ultimately own nothing themselves, while the landlord reaps the benefits of the s***ty economical circumstances people are in to be even more wealthy

So Aussie has a slum lord problem? There are no affordable housing programs or alternatives?

The fact that OP use to be a mod is proof that KTT’s system is flawed. There are some mods that shouldn’t even be mods right now the way they mod s*** tbh.

  • Jul 2, 2020

@yesac yea negative gearing I don't think is really common here in the US

Idk about all that but people who go out of their way to not capitalize the beginning letter of each sentence should be evicted too.

titles do that when you use full caps

I have no clue why he feels the need to capitalize articles in his titles, it makes no sense

I don't think slum lord landlords is a super big issue (I'm not really sure tho)
As there are a decent amount of housing commissions (I guess similar to America's projects) in Australia for people who can't afford to live anywhere else, but there's lots of crime in these buildings, and people are very disenfranchised from the rest of society

Best take in the thread so far

Yea like some early 20s people in Vancouver or amsterdam or some s*** who pay rent do i think they are oppressed or marginalized? No,
Exploited? Maybe but that’s the price of capitalism and as a social democrat as opposed to socialist im willing to trade that for other things

Yes landlords are s***ty but tht context isnt a systemic issue in my understanding atm

But like things change when yr talking about poor folks all over but especially America

High quality (non ghettoized) free/subsidized housing should just be a thing in all countries tht hv the means tho

so who does the person pay to own the place?

I didnt mean they literally own it, as in the people living there could buy and sell it, but I assume they would have a permanent lease to live there from the government

Ironically rent in Amsterdam is so high to the extent that only privileged white kids can afford to move out and live there on their own
