Think about it and you'll have your answer. You live in the house, in this scenario you're likely going to be facing some sort of income shortage yourself and so you are coming together with another individual to overcome that and splitting the costs in a way that benefits you both, because otherwise you might both end up paying more than in this scenario.

Now if the scenario is you own the house, and are not paying a mortgage because youve paid it off or whatever, and simply want to make supplemental income so you charge a person to live in a room in your house, you're a piece of s***.
