Been listening to BLACKsummers'night and blackSUMMERS'night over the past couple weeks, and I'm finally caught up on Maxwell's discography. I enjoyed these albums a lot, but right now I think I prefer his earlier work.
Looking forward to NIGHT, whenever it drops.

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach 🏖️
I wasn't sure what to expect going into this album; I know Gorillaz is a project with many different styles and I have mixed feelings on the Gorillaz songs I already knew. The biggest standout of the album IMO was the production+lush atmosphere. The instrumentation throughout is colorful and varied when needed, I especially like the synths overall and the drums/drum patterns on a few songs. All the songs flow very well together and I felt the album's pacing was on point. The aspect of the album I'm not sure I like is the guest features on many songs. Some of the guests I think worked well, but others did not really fit the style of the song, or the surrounding songs/guests. I like Lou Reed and Mos Def a lot, but not the parts on this album. I also disliked the Bobby Womack parts tbh. My favorite song was definitely Empire Ants, the first 30 seconds is beautiful and immediately grabbed my attention. Other than that the standouts were On Melancholy Hill and Stylo. I know the album has some sort of concept but I didnt pay attention to that at all tbh.
I am going to give this album a few more listens in the coming weeks to digest. From first listen I would give a 7.5/10
One of the most impressive debuts in the last five years but no one ever talks about this.
featuring Lianne La Havas, Charles Bradley, De La Soul, Lalah Hathaway, BJ the Chicago Kid
8.5/10
