it's a damn shame i really loved the Rina EP and the singles for Sawayama were good, but that album grew off of me hard. i cant stand XS tbh
Utada Hikaru is good, but i'm not as crazy about her as others are
that being said, i'm not really a jpop fan in general so take that with a grain of salt

Yea rina had alot of potiential but for some reason her albums didnt really live up to my expectations but i think she still got a potiential to make a classic

rina's ep and her debut still hold up very well for me but her recent album was pretty disapointing even tho i like a few songs
honestly think you should give hikaru's discog another try, she has one of the best discogs in jpop with little to no miss imo

i'd prolly say deep river, it's one of her best albums and it's where i would say she started to come into her own as an artist (her first two albums are good but are very aaliyah/mary j blige inspired).
her album from this year, bad mode was also pretty solid too. has some production from ag club, floating points, and skrillex if ur into any of those artists.
rina got one or two good songs
you dumb b****

I honestly think calling her a “jpop” artist ain’t it and she’s said the same thing.
She’s about as “jpop” as Adele is western bubblegum pop.

Last three albums have all been made in London with live instrumentals and big time musicians along with the best songwriting she’s ever done, check them out.
Fantôme is her magnum opus.
She also has two concerts on Netflix, one of them is her performing from the new album Bad Mode in Air Studios.
My thing with Rina is that she does several things that make her different but not great.
She makes that late 90’s-early 2000’s pop music that makes us feel all warm and cosy but that music is quite often surface level at best and she doesn’t make great enough music to overcome that.
And her presentation is very avant grade but not spectacular and it doesn’t elevate her music.
I think it’s ignorant to compare the two artists but if you were it’s clear that Rina doesn’t have the amount of juice to both make and perform something like this:
(Fun fact, the first track in this, “Kremlin Dusk”? Produced by Timbaland. Wait for those drums in the last minute or so.)
