It's cultural appropriation, and Rocky does need to check his PMF privilege, but he's only a product of his environment.

It was Hov who introduced the bridge between NY and the South on a mainstream level. Having UGK on a hit record and referring to himself as "trill" back in 2000 on Parking Lot Pimpin' set that precedent. Then Dipset and Purple City start doing records with Southern swagger and beats in the mid 2000s -- Rocky's formative years -- probably moved him in that direction.

So who's really to blame for Rocky's cultural appropriation? The answer is: French Montana. The mastermind behind all incidents of cultural appropriation is FRENCH MONTANA.

geography plays a role in influencing the sound of music. the weather, the way ppl dress, the d**** available in your region, the way ppl tend to travel… all contribute to the sound of the music.

if you ride the subway regularly in freezing temps with strangers your music should sound different than someone who has only ever ridden in a car and never experienced a real winter.

artists didnt ‘shun.’ they just used to make music that came natural to them based on where they grew up. which made music sound natural and not forced and lame.

yeah I feel you. I think large cities can def create a variety of artists and sounds. not saying it can only be one thing. also i’m sure someone smarter than me could connect the sonic ties between those artists.

But he also has a lot of support from houston n other southern artists while fusing his inspo with his own style.

Im not from the south so i feel like i cant fully talk about it, but to me it doesnt bother me since he obviously pays homage, does his own thing & has support + collabs with the area.

Its not like a Dj Mustard situation where his early sound is heavily Bayarea focused but he pretended like its original & wanted nothing to do with them (and even insulted) until him n yg got ran'd up on in oakland then he came clean.

yea I think he actually might deserve some cred for promoting Southern culture. Also it's boring as hell to act like everyone can only adapt sounds from where they're from lol, as long as it's done with respect (obviously the case) it's just being innovative
