Just sounds like a list of excuses to me sorry anyone anywhere can literally pick up a camera and go viral right now. I don’t wanna hear this s*** lmfao hahaha niggas are literally making movies with their f***ing iPhones. Miss me with these f***ing excuses. I don’t care what it takes, shoot a pilot on Tik tok, put it on youtube, start a go fund me, crowd source, apply for a grant, to pretentious to use your phone to make art? Cool, start an LLC, obtain business credit, fund your project and use that s*** as a f***ing tax write off, whatever it f***ing takes. I don’t care just get the f*** off twitter just please get the f*** off GO MAKE SOME S***!!!! Not talented? Cool, Go help someone else make some s***, go expose someone who is making s*** but get the f*** off twitter

are those people who are making movies with their iPhones getting a whole studio to fund their movie with tens of millions of dollars, including another multi-million dollar marketing scheme and getting every critic in the world going around reviewing your film and recommending it to their readers? Maybe if you are extremely established like Damien Chazelle or Innaritu or Soderbergh, you get that support, but their efforts don't actually make that mode more accessible. They are just flexing how filming with an iPhone can still look good even though you can't ignore the fact the budgets for their production design and wide access to their talent far outweigh just about anyone who would ever think to film with an iPhone.

Your entire mentality is based on "racism isn't real, just work harder" and you ignore the fact that many of the people of color who are being supported by this industry got there because they worked to please the whites. Jon Chu got a movie funded about asians but he had to remind everybody in the title that it was about asians and he just copied every generic white rom com movie out there so he could make it marketable for white people. And now he is teaming up with one of the most problematic figures in the industry for how he tackles diversity and people of color in his work in Lin Manuel Miranda to essentially film a diversity ad to white people. This is what gets funded and supported by an industry that has always been whites on top. Again, there are numerous filmmakers out there who made great authentic films from the 70s-00s from legends like Charles Burnett to filmmakers like Cheryl Dunye who made some great early films but now don't get that funding to make their vision (because even tho whites still controlled the industry in the 70s, its never been as producer driven or artistically controlled by white elites as it is today) so are just forced to do random episodes on mediocre tv to still do what they love. It has nothing to do with these filmmakers not going to make some s***, it has everything to do with the fact that this is an industry controlled by white producers and that not having that backing is essentially telling somebody that if they want to pour millions of their own dollars into something or get something crowdfunded, it will be an investment they don't get back.

Bruh, you’re either going to do it or you’re not. I’m not sitting here saying it’s easy as pie. I’m just saying it’s not rocket science. Success is relative and each of us has to define what that means for ourselves. If your goal is to be funded by a big name brand studio and get a film released internationally world wide to millions and millions of people, all power to you just know there will be obstacles in your way because you will essentially always be competing within a system you did not create and wasn’t intended for you but such is life as a POC. Here’s the big secret though. The one they don’t want you to know about. All these systems, all their ways of thinking and creating and producing, what they define as success....None of it is absolute All I’m saying is there are ways. There’s literally a million reasons for each and every one of us to give up on whatever dreams or aspirations we have for ourselves right now, especially as a POC or...or...or...you know, we can go make some s***. Pick up a camera and make some s***, a mic, a book, a business idea, whatever it is. Get with friends, get with family, post, blog, promote, release, build, keep doing it, even if it sucks, keep doing it, even if no ones sees keep doing it, do it until it’s actually good, do it until people start paying attention, then do it some more or you can continue to let a farce dictate what you can or can’t do but literally anything, including complete and utter failure is better than writing think pieces and coining phrases on Twitter that lead to empty discussions on race and how we still dealing with the same obstacles until Kanye decides to tweet or Cardi B shows you her new shin implant

I ain't saying to give up, I'm saying the reality is those filmmakers who aren't getting funded or once were getting funded but not anymore aren't fitting your description of "lazy bums who just cry on Twitter". There are many filmmakers out there with authentic visions, but the artistry is not subjective when its mostly white elites who control the availability of what you see and what you think. The combination of media and these industries is designed for everybody to have the exact same opinions on what art is good and what isn't and therefore that dictates what can be made and what can't. It was a hell of a lot easier to get authentic visions filmed in the 70s than it is today. And sure making schlocky student films for fun can be cool when you are younger, but eventually reality will settle in and you know you will need money. Similarly, if you want to take filmmaking seriously, if you want to actually make money, you have to get white elites to back your film. I can probably count on hand the number of films that were made for under a million dollars that actually made a real profit

Here is an article that shows you the reality of the film industry and this idea that you don't need millions to make something sustainable for a career:

This is where technology can be and should be leveraged. Even as an independent filmmaker, you’re still essentially participating in the exact same archaic structure that simply is not fundamentally designed to even benefit you. So pivots are in order, redefining what success means or is in this industry, the creative industry in general really, is definitely in order. I can foresee a future in which this happens and personally, barring some unforeseen change in the way this country governs itself, I believe technology will be pivotal to this change but people are so busy complaining about what is they can’t even see what could be. They can’t see the tools and resources that exist right now for you to at least make this a relatively sustainable or obtainable path. Perhaps it won’t look quite like you thought it would be but what’s great about this time is I don’t think it has to. This is the age of innovation and we have to think outside the box in every single aspect in order to break through old chains and old structures but that’s just what I believe. Appreciate the discussion

Genuinely a shame this movie is being ‘cancelled’ for lack of a better word, by the masses. This is probably the best musical turned movie I’ve ever seen.

Technology can only go so far I feel. Even mega budget films that over rely on technology for visuals tend to look schlocky today. So to hope for technology to make your visuals work (whether you’re making a genre film or just trying to use a cheap camera or phone) on top of compensating for a clear lack of access to talented connections as compared to those that work in these elite industries without even having to factor in the notion that those industries will use their vast resources to advance their tech to a far higher level than an independent could ever manage still encapsulates a very sizeable gap in the independent sphere and the film industry.

I think things will continue to get worse here. The mid budget film has died and we already are seeing indie film festivals only real purpose at this point for the white media backed films to get distributed by big companies so those directors can later get thrown into some soulless IP franchise and make dogshit for the rest of their career until they’re chewed and spit out. It’s a very difficult road for a new director to want to stick to their vision. Even Lulu Wang who directed one of the most loved films of that year literally discussed how there were so many times during trying to get the Farewell made where she wanted to quit because of how frustrating it was in dealing with producers. I’m sure she’s gotten tons of offers to do bigger movies, and that would honestly be the easier path than continuing to try to make small authentic films.

I watched in a non-IMAX theater and thought the sound overall was pretty good...some of the big group numbers felt like the music was overbearing to the vocals at times but there's some smaller details I noticed when watching in the theater that I missed completely the first time I watched it at home lol

I wouldn't say it's the masses lol most reactions I've read are praising the film...the low turnout at the box office isn't surprising to me considering it was also available on HBO Max for anyone to watch for free if they subscribe though it sucks it didn't do better

has like a 96 percent positive rating on rotten tomatoes and the only negative reviews on there are hot garbage takes tbh

  • So good and made me proud to be Latino and want to learn more about other Latinx cultures besides Mexican. Also, cut my boy Lin some slack. He or anyone working on this can’t get it perfect. But I always will support my Afro-Latinx fam

It’s doing well, just didn’t met the box office expectations. But if us Latin people want things like this more often, we gotta support and do better

or the fact that it was a play that came out years ago

reminds me of Catholics getting mad at The Da Vinci Code film when the novel was actually more controversial as was the sequel Angels and Demons which Catholics apparently didn't give a f*** about lmao...movie literally ends with Hanks character saying "what matters is what you believe in at the end of the day" and had priests all over the world calling it the devils work

still don't understand what ppl hate about this guy (other than he's successful while still being humble and they're mostly just angry on twitter and could never write something half as good as In The Heights or Hamilton)...every interview I've seen and any other clips he just seems like a dorky dude who's just thankful to be where he's at in life...get on twitter though and ppl act like he's the worst f***in person alive...then they bring up the fact that Immortal Technique bullied him in high school like Technique didn't publicly side with Lin and condemn his behavior when he was younger...keep doin your thing LMM
