I do it because I know how s*** gets buried in music sxn
Especially when it’s not gossip or about something popping to users here

I figure if I format my thread titles differently it might encourage more people to click on it than otherwise

    yes

    and don't start now

I think you’re missing what I was saying in OP though

I don’t think pop music is dead

I think the iteration of pop that included artists like Gaga, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Pink etc is dead

I think pop is starting to try and find a new territory - there’s the 80s revival w blinding lights And don’t start now, there’s melodic rap/singing w Post, Juice etc, there’s more conventional pop w hip hop influence like Ariana grande or Billie Eilish

I don’t think there’s a clear path forward for the genre yet but I think there will be one

I don’t think Lorde revolutionized pop music she just popularized indie pop a bit more

But some indie pop hits were big just not as big as Royals

Definitely agree that pop is dying. The Billies of the world will be successful but I can't see labels jumping head over heels to clone her. What she does is kind of hard to pull off because of how minimalistic it is. Those old pop stars are barely surviving nowadays and are being supported by small but extremely loyal groups of stans; they're making up like 75% of pop album sales because the streaming numbers are pitiful. I think we're going to see Rap on top for the next several years before a challenger even appears. I think the "Pop" genre is as dead as Rock at this point and I don't think it will ever return.

I don’t think it’s hard to replicate what Billie is doing check this out

I don’t know man, all of these artist you mentioned make different music

I’ll say the era of Black Eyed Peas / Kesha / Lady Gaga / Flo Rida of EDM pop is dead

    Good era tho rip

I think Lorde took elements of several artists who also influenced pop - Kanye, James Blake, Lana - and combined them in a way that felt like it’s own thing but also felt distinctly more pop than any of their output and in that way kinda opened a lane

I don’t think it’s revolution but it’s similar to what Kanye does of taking ideas that already exist and creating a product from those ideas in a different space

    Yea that’s what I mean

And with the artists down the bottom they all do make different music but all fit the pop label which is what I mean

Pop always involves a ton of different sounds but usually there’s a pretty clearly dominant sound
I don’t think we have that right now and I think those are some potential sounds that could become THE ONE

Mmm Timberlake maybe and Gaga in her later music

But pink Katy Perry and 09 Gaga all had pretty similar sounds
Obviously some differences but they all clearly fit a genre

I disagree Ariana and Billie Eilish are still “pop”

Pop exists it just changes all the time

P!nk and Katy in 2009 def but Gaga? lol

though both sub genres that Gaga and Katy fall under (being bubblegum and electro/dance) aren't doing as well as they used so the point remains the same regardless

    They are

Pink and JT aren’t “exactly” pop either but they definitely pop

But yeah it’s pretty crazy how much pop fell off and how dominant hip-hop became and is currently.

I wonder when the time will come where a different genre (pop, rock, R&B) will our perform hip-hop

Will be interesting to see what does

I could see it being “progressive r&b” or whatever they call it
