This dude only good work to this day is call me by your name

horror love story seen intrastin but hope it isn’t as s*** as Suspiria was

remake was so much harder than og, way better mystery and eeriness, performances across the board absolutely bodies the og, thom yorke’s score is insane and the last act is brazy

luca hasn’t missed since cmbyn, wawea a young classic too, gives a fresh update on the coming of age genre

yeah no it doesnt even hold a candle to the og. The OG's story is simpler but through incredible style and visual storytelling, it says so much more about its characters than Guadagnino's self serious psuedo realist drama that tries to force a boring political slant onto the work. Its so over long in an attempt to replace the creative and vivid style of Suspiria with doing everything that Suspiria was right to not do and its a great case of why substance is not better than style in cinema.

In many ways, Suspiria 2018 kind of captures everything that is wrong about modern filmmaking. I will say Thom Yorke's score is nice on its own, but it doesnt fit the film or the story one bit.

I disagree, thom’s score fits perfectly with the darkness of berlin luca portrayed. The city itself is entirely a character in itself.

I actually recently watched the og like last month so it’s fresh in my mind and I don’t get how you’re talking about “visual style” when all it’s really doing is abusing the use of colour which is a great motif but it’s so on the nose in the og. Luca’s use of dark muted environment is much more impressive and is admirable.

Also, why not have an undertone of political viewpoint? I mean it doesn’t only have to be political but If you’re remaking a movie, there needs to be an additional layer of commentary or social opinion - or else it’s just a copy & paste.

Argento does a hell of a lot more than just "abuse color" lmao. The opening murder scene for example showcases how intricate and creative he gets through his images. He allows for his film to feel so poetic in how he connects images of broken shards of glass and the wire noose to that heart being stabbed and its something similar Guadagnino tries to emulate in the best sequence of his film with the first big dance sequence. Elsewhere, Guadagnino's images and editing fail to ever connect to anywhere near what Argento does consistently throughout his film.

And I feel the political viewpoint is so heavy handed and it just interrupts from the atmosphere that Guadagnino is trying to create in his already bloated and busy film. This tends to be a big problem in a lot of modern filmmaking where filmmakers feel so strongly about forcing in some political message into their work without ever considering if it actually adds to what they are trying to say.

I found Thom's score haunting, but much moreso than that, it felt chill and beautiful. It just doesnt really sound like a soundtrack to a horror film, maybe like a melancholic drama.

I get your point, thanks for the opinion. I just personally loved the creepy and mysterious Berlin setting with Luca peeling back the layers act by act over Argento’s colourful fest. The 70s acting doesn’t convince me either but gotta respect the og.
