Lupe verses are impressive on a technical level like the 2nd verse of this song, his rhyme scheme is crazy.

But ngl since DW I don't really have an idea on what he's rapping about sometimes. Like I get the overall concept of the album. But I don't really get what the subject matter of this song is supposed to be.

He's gotten overly wordy since T&Y and it doesn't help that the production has gotten worse. He's not as bad as Em with it. But I do wished he toned it down

First song (Samurai) is influenced by Amy Winehouse saying she wants to be a battle rapper (it's in her point of view). Cake is more about him and making music (and how fans influence the music).

I actually caught the Amy Winehouse hook. I guess once the full thing drops it will make more sense but to me it’s just a lot of great technical rapping with a random hooks.

He’s just talking about doing his job as a rapper and the relationship/connection with his listeners on this song basically. The act of rapping, the act of listening, and the symbiotic relationship between the two and how one feeds the other.

He seems to say the listener is almost just as important as the writer, as we are the ones taking in the messages which is an important part of the process

An artist doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Interesting theme and loving the artist angle on this album

One reason I don’t agree on toning it down is I prefer when Lupe is flowing faster as opposed to the somewhat lazier, more conversational or sing songy flows that we’ve got a lot of in his later career

His flow is great on here and the rhymes are great, I think these verses are rap nerd s*** done right

Hook actually grew on me from seeing the video too. I probably like this one more than Samurai overall
