the album was being worked on around 2014 and was scrapped for faces. this piece was actually commissioned by mac long after this project was still a thing mac was working on. mac saw this piece and asked the artist to make a version using his face.
Theres nothing actually attaching this picture to ballooneirsm besides the fact that when I found out that this was title for the then unknown album and made threads about it I attached that pic and it caught on as the cover. The pic was only posted once previously by the artist himself and went pretty under the radar by most mac fans as he posted it the day Mac passed. - OPMar 4, 2023·1 reply
but again it wouldn't have caught on if the art itself wasn't so good so shoutout yesterdaynite. far from unknown and has been doing good stuff before and after this. Honestly think the cover adds a lot of the interest people have for this project.

its really not that crazy of a coincidence that two things are just related to a balloon lol. Mac's music is full of metaphors for getting high and escapism since macadelic.
the album and artwork are from completely different times and nobody in Mac's camp has ever mentioned that Mac was working or returning to the balloonerism concept once he decided to go with faces.
